Despite published reports to the contrary, Reed Sorenson will drive the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Dodge at Watkins Glen this weekend. On Monday, Sorenson was involved in a multicar crash in Turn 1 on Lap 182 at Pocono Raceway and suffered a reaction to carbon monoxide. When the team returned to North Carolina later that afternoon, Sorenson still wasn't feeling up to speed. "He wasn't well when we landed so we took the precautions of having him looked at," said Jeff Dickerson, Vice President of Motorsports Management International which represents Sorenson. "Dr. (Jerry) Petty said that Reed is 100 percent ready to go. His initial review was fine. I don't anticipate any problems. He has a clean bill of health." Richard Petty Motorsports released a statement that "the Petty team retained Jacques Villeneuve as a substitute driver in case Sorenson continued to suffer from the effects of carbon monoxide he inhaled in Monday's race at Pocono. Fortunately, Sorenson has recovered from the accident. Owners George and Foster Gillett along with the Richard Petty Motorsports team appreciate Villeneuve's willingness to help out on such short notice." Sorenson ended up finishing 35th at Pocono, 15 laps down. Villeneuve, the 1997 Formula One World Champion, attempted a short stint in NASCAR, making seven Truck Series starts and two Cup starts in 2007 as well as one Nationwide Series start in 2008. He was contacted while on vacation in Europe about his availability. Due to the shortened week and Villeneuve's location, the team needed a contingency plan had Sorenson not cleared his physical. However, team sources confirmed that Villeneuve will not be standing by for Sorenson this weekend.
