California Speedway gets second Winston Cup race
Fontana, CA (Sports Network) - Beginning in 2004, the California Speedway will
hold a second Winston Cup event, on Labor Day weekend. The two-mile oval has
held a single Winston Cup race each year since 1997.
NASCAR officials have added the race by removing the fall event from the North
Carolina Speedway in Rockingham and moving the traditional Labor Day event,
the Southern 500 at Darlington to the second Rockingham date in November. The
Southern 500 has been held on Labor Day weekend for the past 53 years.
"NASCAR's Winston Cup Series realignment offers the opportunity to increase
the sport's exposure in major markets, which benefits the fans, teams, track
operators, sponsors and television broadcast partners," said Lesa France
Kennedy, President of International Speedway Corporation. ISC owns 12 of the
23 tracks in which Winston Cup events are held, including all three involved
in the realignment.
A complete 2004 Winston Cup schedule is expected to be announced later this
