Power Rankings after Richmond

After leading the most laps at Richmond, Denny Hamlin remains at the top of the Power Rankings. While this list usually reflects what happened at last weekend’s race, this week it’s more of a forecast on how I expect the Chase for the Sprint Cup to play out.

This week’s list:

Truex Jr.

Denny Hamlin

4 - 1/12
Bad pit strategy cost Hamlin another victory at Richmond, but he is the top seed heading into the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Jimmie Johnson

3 4 1/20
Although he’s been on cruise control the past couple of weeks, bet against Johnson and the No. 48 team at your own risk. Five titles speaks volumes.

Tony Stewart

3 8 1/15
The three-time champ stunk up the joint in practice and qualifying, yet when the checkered flag fell he was fourth. Look out, rest of the field.

Brad Keselowski

3 1 1/21
Not only does Keselowski have three race victories this year, but he’s shown something few others have: The ability to go on a lengthy hot streak.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.

1 3 1/13
It’s been a dream season for Earnhardt so far. Now we find out how good he and the No. 88 team really are.

Clint Bowyer

2 4 3/19
The Richmond winner has a lot of good tracks in the Chase and could surprise some people, something he’s already done in his first year with Michael Waltrip.

Matt Kenseth

1 - 1/13
Consistency got Matt Kenseth this far, but he’s a lame duck on a team that hasn’t had a whole lot of speed lately.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear

Kasey Kahne

2 4 2/22
Now that he’s in the Chase, Kahne is a legitimate championship threat. He's going to be tough down the stretch.

Greg Biffle

2 5 1/12
Like Kenseth, Biffle hasn’t shown much speed lately, but who knows what tricks Roush Fenway Racing has left up its sleeves?

Jeff Gordon

1 3 2/21
After an astonishing clutch run at Richmond, I’m tempted to put Gordon much higher. But the Chase format has never been kind to him.

Martin Truex Jr.

0 6 3/13
So far this year, Truex has been very, very good. The only problem is, some of those ahead of him have been great.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear

Kevin Harvick

0 4 1/13
Now that he’s back with Gil Martin as his crew chief, Harvick is running better, but probably not good enough to win the title.

Kyle Busch

1 4 3/17
What can you say? Missing the Chase for the second time in five seasons at Joe Gibbs Racing is a huge disappointment for Busch.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear

Ryan Newman

1 1 6/22
For a time, it looked as if Newman would race his way into the Chase, but he faded late.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear

Marcos Ambrose

1 1 14/21
Give Ambrose props: Although he missed the Chase, he’s having the best year of his career.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear

Mark Martin

0 - 10/20
Truth: Old guys rule. Martin got in third top-three finish of the season at Richmond.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear

Paul Menard

0 1 7/20
Not a great year for Menard, who has finished 10th to 20th 17 times in 26 races.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear

Carl Edwards

0 - 4/19
Down the stretch, Edwards kept saying he was going to win. Last five races: 17th, 36th, 22nd, 6th, 14th.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear

Joey Logano

1 2 8/20
In his last seven races, Logano has finished 30th or worse four times.
Team: Home | Stats | News | Gear

Jeff Burton

0 - 4/21
An excellent sixth-place run for Burton went unnoticed in the Chase hoopla.
