NASCAR 167 43 NASCAR Hall of Fame nominees for 2014 class 30891835 Ralph Seagraves Ralph+Seagraves NASCAR

Hall of Fame credentials: Seagraves played an integral role in altering the way sponsorship worked in NASCAR. In the late 1960s, he was an official with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He met Junior Johnson, who suggested Seagraves sponsor his cars. Seagraves took that a step further: He sponsored NASCAR’s top series. In 1971, for the first time since its inception in 1949, NASCAR’s premier series had major corporate backing. The NASCAR Winston Cup Series began. The partnership launched NASCAR into the national spotlight and began a sponsorship that lasted more than 30 years, ending in 2003. Seagraves also landed top sponsorships with other major sporting outfits, most notably NHRA. During his tenure, several tracks were able to refurbish their facilities as part of NASCAR’s development program.

Baker won the championship and Fox was named mechanic of the year at season’s end. He then opened his own engine shop, earning victories with Junior Johnson in the 1960 Daytona 500 and three times building David Pearson’s winning Pontiacs. In 1962, he moved into a car ownership role and went on to earn 14 wins and 16 pole positions in 200 starts. In 1990, he became NASCAR’s engine builder, a position he held until he retired at the age of 80 in 1996.
