NASCAR 167 43 NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup drivers at Martinsville Speedway 30318230 On point On+point NASCAR

Martinsville Speedway was a wild, rambunctious affair with several crashes marring the action throughout.

The early laps were especially difficult for drivers, even those in NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup. With the field set using NASCAR's weather procedure for rained-out qualifying,  the 12 drivers contending for the title started at the front of the pack (with points leader Carl Edwards, pictured, on the pole). Which ones stayed there?

Started first, finished ninth: Edwards started from the pole position, but his typical struggles at Martinsville hampered his effort throughout the early segments of the race. Edwards spent some time near the front, but for much of the race he lagged behind the field — and a slate of Chase contenders. He was a lap down late in the race and trying to find some way to salvage position and his points lead. He earned the free pass during a caution on Lap 398, then made pit stops during the next two caution periods in an effort to try to gain ground. He was 18th on the restart and then worked his way through traffic for his final position.

Started fourth, finished first: Stewart tapped a competitor on pit road on Lap 70 but rallied from the incident. He had to fight to stay on the lead lap at one point, then made changes on pit road that had him climbing back through the field with 100 laps to go. He made up nine positions on a pit stop shortly thereafter and once more was in position to challenge. He then worked his way through the field, nudged past Jimmie Johnson in the closing laps and took the win, his third in the Chase this season.

Started fifth, finished fourth: Harvick struggled with an ill-handling car early in the race, but he and his crew worked diligently to get back into contention and among the front-runners. Harvick took left-side tires on a pit sequence during the Lap 398 caution period, taking the lead over the field. He led 35 laps but was bumped out of the top spot. Harvick then dropped back through the field as he worked to get back into the inside line. Harvick rallied late, though, for a top-five finish.

Started third, finished 17th: Keselowski passed competitors on pit road throughout the race, steadily gaining positions. He looked like he would be a factor in the finish as he restarted in the top five on a final caution, but Keselowski was rooted out of position and spun toward the wall in the final laps to fall back at the finish.

Started second, finished 31st: Kenseth helped bring out the caution on Lap 455 when he hooked onto the rear of Brian Vickers' car and caused him to spin and slam into the wall. Kenseth then made contact with Kevin Harvick exiting pit lane on the ensuing stop. Kenseth had run a strong race throughout the day, then slipped on Lap 464, made contact with Kyle Busch and then slammed the wall. Kenseth incurred severe damage on the rear of his car and had to go to the garage for repairs. Kenseth returned to the track on Lap 485, but his championship hopes had taken a massive hit.

Started seventh, finished second: Battling Kevin Harvick for the lead on Lap 136, Johnson made minor contact and then took the top spot. During a caution sequence on Lap 459, Johnson opted to stay on the track when most of the leaders pitted. That strategy ended up paying off for him. He took and held the lead through several late cautions, but Tony Stewart nudged past him on Lap 498 of the 500-lap race to take the lead.

Started sixth, finished 27th: Busch led 118 laps early in the race, but on Lap 463 he found trouble. Matt Kenseth had an issue with a tire and was sliding and the two made contact, causing Busch to spin and hit the wall. He pitted for repairs, then raced out onto the track trying to stay on the lead lap and his left front tire came off the car as he tried to get up to speed. Busch obviously pitted once more.

Started eighth, finished 14th: Busch made contact with Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Lap 7 of the race after Earnhardt had bounced off the Turn 1 curbing and into him. Busch would battle his car for much of the race and expressed frustration with the track in general. On Lap 427, Busch and Paul Menard made contact, causing Busch to spin and do damage to both cars. On Lap 475, Busch tagged Ryan Newman and caused him to spin. Busch would still manage to recover and earn a top-10 finish.

Started ninth, finished seventh: On Lap 7, Earnhardt tagged the curbing, then spun up into Kurt Busch, creating a logjam on the track that ended up impacting several drivers. Earnhardt worked his way back through traffic, then won out among those who pitted with 41 laps to go. He restarted fourth as three stayed out on the track. Earnhardt then battled with several challengers and held on for his final position.

Started 10th, finished third: Gordon sustained early damage as he tapped teammate Jimmie Johnson, who was attempting to avoid the crash involving Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kurt Busch. Gordon would make 11 pit stops in the first 250 laps but also rally from 41st to taking the lead in that stretch. He led 114 laps but settled for third on a day when he and his team showcased their ability to recover from incidents.
