NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Jimmie Johnson (48) goes low to avoid Greg Biffle (16), Matt Kenseth (17) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (88) as they crash during a multicar accident in October 2008. All four were chasing the title at the time. Johnson finished ninth, Biffle 24th, Kenseth 26th and Earnhardt Jr. 28th. Most were able to hold their points position through the incident, though losing their advantage over the next position, though Earnhardt Jr. slipped from eighth to 10th. Biffle remained third, but lost an additional 47 points to the leader; Kenseth went from 192 points to 245 points back and Earnhardt went from 190 to 249 points back.

Kyle Busch (5) was among the Chasers suffering a setback in the crash, finishing 36th. He entered the race sixth in the standings, 136 points off the lead, but left it eighth and 260 points back.
