Dale Earnhardt Jr. will join Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson and Team Penske's Joey Logano at the back of the field for Sunday's Monster Energy Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway.
On Sunday morning, Earnhardt tweeted a picture of his cut right-front tire.
Per the NASCAR rulebook, teams have to start the race with the tires they qualified with. Since Earnhardt's No. 88 team will be forced to change one of his tires, the rule states he has to give up his 18th-place starting spot and move to the rear.
Earnhardt also tweeted the team will only be allowed to replace the cut tire, leaving him with one sticker tire and three scuffed tires to start the race.
Definitely not the way Earnhardt wanted to make his 600th career Cup start.
