News: Only Newman controls his own destiny in making the field for the Chase, no matter who wins at Richmond. If there is a repeat 2014 winner (or a Matt Kenseth victory), Newman is guaranteed a spot in the Chase if he finishes 41st or better; or 42nd with at least one lap led; or 43rd and the most laps led, NASCAR PR reports. Impact: Only a new winner to the season could put a damper on Newman's Chase ambitions. If a new winner occurs, those finishing marks drop to 18th-, 19th- or 20th-place respectively. That would introduce some risk to Newman's Richmond performance. However, it does look like the driver of the No. 31 Chevrolet will likely make the field for this season's playoff, barring any last minute upset victories by drivers currently outside the Chase field.(RotoWire, )

News: Newman finished seventh in the Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway Sunday night. Impact: As the old cliche goes, the creme rises to the top and so did Newman at Atlanta. He raced in and out of the Top 10 all night long in this 500-mile event. However, Atlanta is one of his favorite ovals and it ultimately showed in the final laps. Newman pushed the No. 31 Chevrolet into the Top 10 late and claimed his ninth Top-10 finish of the season. He remains ninth in the point standings, but rides atop the Chase bubble going to Richmond due to being winless this season.(RotoWire, )

News: Newman finished 13th in Saturday's Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Impact: Newman wasn't able to capitalize on starting in 11th place, but did manage his second top-15 finish in a row. He's currently in ninth place, 135 points behind leader Jeff Gordon in the Sprint Cup standings.(RotoWire, )
