News: McCutchen, who has swiped at least 20 bags in each of his first five seasons, remains stuck on 17 stolen bases heading into the final week of 2014.
Impact: He was picked off first and was caught stealing over the weekend. Look for the center fielder to be active on the basepaths in Week 26. McCutchen was hit by two Matt Garza fastballs Saturday and also collided with the center field wall, but hasn't missed any action. He has just four RBI in September, but holds a .329/.417/.534 line in 19 games. Keep in mind that Pittsburgh might choose to rest McCutchen after its playoff ranking is determined.
Mon. Sep 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Watson allowed two singles and hit one batter but earned his first save of the season Sunday in a scoreless inning.
Impact: With closer Mark Melancon out after pitching in three straight games, Watson got the ninth-inning call. The lefty, who ranks second in the NL with 33 holds, upped his velocity and hit 97 mph on the radar gun. He could take over as Pittsburgh's closer in 2015 if anything happens to Melancon.
Sep 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Worley pitched a gem Sunday, scattering four hits over eight innings in a win over the Brewers. He needed only 82 pitches (63 strikes) to get through the outing.
Impact: He struck out five and didn't allow a walk. Worley, whose ERA improved to 2.93 Sunday, will next take the bump Friday in Cincinnati.

News: Alvarez (foot) will not be available if the Pirates advance to the play-in game, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Alvarez was expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks after he was diagnosed with a stress reaction in the fourth metatarsal of his left foot on Sept. 10, so it's no surprise that he won't be available for that contest. However, if the Pirates are able to advance to the NLDS, there's a chance he could return to action, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune. Pirates general manager Neal Huntington did not comment on the likelihood of this occurring, but it apparently isn't out of the realm of possibility at this point. Unfortunately, a projected playoff return is little consolation for fantasy owners who had been hanging on to him during the season's final months.
Sat. Sep 20, 2014 | STATS
News: Martin hit a three-run homer off Jonathan Broxton in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates inched closer to a playoff berth with a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.
Impact: Martin, batting .296 with 11 home runs this season, is 14 for 39 (.359) with three homers and 14 RBIs during a 10-game hit streak.
Sat. Sep 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Harrison went 1-for-5 on Friday against the Brewers, extending his hitting streak to six games.
Impact: After a brief slump, Harrison has once again bounced back with 11 hits in his last 32 at-bats. The third baseman leads the NL with a .318 batting average, one point ahead of Justin Morneau.
Sat. Sep 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Holdzkom earned his first big league victory Friday, walking one and striking out another in a scoreless relief inning against the Brewers.
Impact: Holdzkom has posted seven consecutive scoreless outings, whiffing 11 batters while walking just two. He's bounced around because of an inability to throw strikes but has given Pittsburgh a boost out of the bullpen.
Fri. Sep 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Worley will replace Charlie Morton (groin) in the Pirates' rotation this weekend, making the start Sunday against Milwaukee, the Pittsburgh Tribune's Travis Sawchik reports.
Impact: It's possible that Morton might be done for the season, which would presumably mean Worley would also start Sept. 26 against the Reds, but that's not confirmed yet. Worley isn't a terrible streaming option as he has a 3.18 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP in 96.1 innings with Pittsburgh this season, and he'll be facing a Milwaukee offense that managed just five runs in its three-game series against St. Louis earlier this week.
Fri. Sep 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Morton is dealing with groin, abdominal and hip pain and will miss his scheduled start Sunday, the Pittsburgh Tribune's Travis Sawchik reports.
Impact: He said he was discouraged by his bullpen session Thursday and will be evaluated next week, adding that surgery is a "possibility." It sounds like those chasing counting stats in single-season mixed leagues might be best served to move on from Morton. Vance Worley will get the start Sunday in Morton's place. The best-case scenario for Morton's owners is that he feels better next week and can make his final start of the season Sept. 26 in Cincinnati.
Fri. Sep 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Davis is out of the lineup Friday against the Brewers.
Impact: Davis will sit in favor of Gaby Sanchez at first base in Game 1 of the Brewers series, after starting the final two against Boston. With just a .200/.342/.333 so far this month, Davis may be in danger of losing out on additional time to the likes Sanchez and Andrew Lambo over the final week of the regular season.
Fri. Sep 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Martin went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in Friday's 4-2 win over the Brewers.
Impact: Martin extended his now 10-game hitting streak in dramatic fashion Friday night, as his three-run deep drive in the bottom of the eighth erased a 2-0 deficit and ultimately delivered the Pirates a victory.
Fri. Sep 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Locke worked seven strong innings against the Brewers on Friday night, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three.
Impact: Locke continues to turn in solid work down the stretch. Even including a poor performance at St. Louis back on September 2, the Pirates' lefty has posted an impressive 2.83 ERA and 1.16 WHIP across 41.1 innings during his last seven starts. Locke is slated to be back atop the mound Wednesday in Atlanta.
Fri. Sep 19, 2014 | STATS
News: Cole allowed two runs in seven-plus innings in a 3-2 victory over Boston on Thursday and won a season-high third consecutive start.
Impact: Cole (10-5, 3.85 ERA) has benefited from a combined 19 runs of support in his three games. He has a 3.79 ERA in that stretch along with 21 strikeouts and one walk in 19 innings.
Fri. Sep 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Polanco is out of the lineup Friday against the Brewers.
Impact: Despite homering in the team's 9-1 win over the Red Sox on Wednesday, Polanco is now set to sit in favor of Travis Snider in right for a second straight game. The two will likely continue to split time at the position over the remainder of the regular season, but Polanco seems like a good bet to open 2015 with the everyday job.
Thu. Sep 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cole earned his 10th win of the season Thursday, throwing seven strong innings against Boston. He allowed two runs and six hits while striking out seven.
Impact: After making quality starts against the Cubs in his last two appearances, Cole fared well against the struggling Red Sox offense. He's made five quality starts in six tries since coming off the disabled list in late August, although that is a little deceiving, given that he's posted a 3.99 ERA during that period. On a positive note, he has a sparkling 40:9 K:BB during that 38.1-inning stretch. The young righty is scheduled to make two road starts next week against Atlanta and Cincinnati.
Thu. Sep 18, 2014 | STATS
News: Liriano earned his third win in a row Wednesday night against Boston.
Impact: Liriano (6-10, 3.45 ERA) allowed one run in six innings in a 9-1 victory. The left-hander worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and has now given up two runs or less in 11 of his 12 starts since the All-Star break, looking like the pitcher who won 16 games in 2013 than the one that struggled with his command and his health during a rocky first half to 2014.
Thu. Sep 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Polanco is out of the lineup Thursday against the Red Sox.
Impact: Polanco is essentially stuck in a timeshare with Travis Snider at this point in the season, and it's unclear when that might change. It's obvious that Polanco is the better talent, but he'll need to improve upon his .240/.314/.351 batting line before the extra starts are doled out to him accordingly.
Thu. Sep 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Martin is out of the lineup Thursday against the Red Sox.
Impact: Martin had started four straight games, batting 5-for-14 with two doubles, a homer, and five RBI. His steady climb to a .300 batting average on the season will have to wait a day, as Chris Stewart steps in to relieve him.
Thu. Sep 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Mercer (back) has returned to the Pittsburgh lineup Thursday against the Red Sox, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Mercer was held out of the lineup the last two days after his back locked up on him in the batting cage, but some light rest was apparently all he needed. He'll bat seventh in the order for the Pirates.
Wed. Sep 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Snider is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.
Impact: It's likely just a regular day off for Snider, who has started the past six games after dealing with a hamstring injury. Gregory Polanco will assume right field duties in his place.
Wed. Sep 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Mercer (back) is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.
Impact: Mercer was a late scratch from the lineup Tuesday, and it appears the tight back will force him out of the lineup yet again. Clint Barmes will start in his place at shortstop.
Wed. Sep 17, 2014 | STATS
News: Marte went 2 for 4 with a dinger Tuesday.
Impact: Marte is hitting .405 in his last 12 games for the Bucs, who are charging hard toward yet another playoff appearance.
Wed. Sep 17, 2014 | STATS
News: Morton came off the disabled list to gain his first victory since July 2, and the Pirates beat the Boston Red Sox 4-0 on Tuesday night for their ninth win in 11 games.
Impact: Sidelined since Aug. 16 because of right hip inflammation and a sports hernia, Morton allowed four hits in five innings, struck out six and walked two. He had been 0-3 with a 5.09 ERA in his eight previous starts.
Tue. Sep 16, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Marte (arm) is in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Marte sat out the Pirates' last three games after being hit by a pitch Thursday, but he will return to action following a team off day Monday. Marte will man left field and bat sixth against Red Sox starter Anthony Ranaudo.
Tue. Sep 16, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Mercer is a late scratch Tuesday with a tight back, the Pittsburgh Tribune's Rob Biertempfel reports.
Impact: Clint Barmes will replace Mercer at shortstop and in the eight hole in the lineup. Consider Mercer day-to-day.
Tue. Sep 16, 2014 | STATS
News: Harrison was 2 for 5 with his 35th double in a 7-3 win over the Cubs on Sunday.
Impact: Harrison is batting a scorching .394 over his last 16 games with 11 runs and 10 extra-base hits.
Tue. Sep 16, 2014 | STATS
News: Walker was 3 for 4 with his 20th homer in a 7-3 win over the Cubs on Sunday.
Impact: Walker has hit .316 with 13 RBIs over his last 15 contests.
Tue. Sep 16, 2014 | STATS
News: Volquez improved to 12-7 Sunday, limiting the Cubs to one earned run over seven innings in a 7-3 victory.
Impact: Volquez is ending the season on a strong note, going 4-0 with a 2.18 ERA over his last 10 starts.
Mon. Sep 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Pirates will evaluate Morton's (hernia) immediate future based off of his Tuesday start. "If Charlie throws well it gives Vance (Worley) a bit of a breather, which is not the end of the world," GM Neal Huntington told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "If Charlie doesn't throw well, we'll bridge the gap and bring Vance in behind him and go from there."
Impact: Morton, who hasn't pitched in the majors since August 15, allowed 26 runs in his last 39 innings prior to going on the DL. Pittsburgh is hoping that the time off gives him a fresh outlook, but Morton said just several days ago that he thought he was probably through for 2014. "My impression is that they want me to stay ready in case something bad happens to someone else," Morton told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "And my impression is for me to go out and pitch again, someone's going to have to get hurt or struggle."
Sun. Sep 14, 2014 | STATS
News: Martin went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs in Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
Impact: Martin is on a bit of a roll, going 10 for 24 with nine RBIs in his last six games.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Walker went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI on Sunday.
Impact: After going 0-for-5 on his birthday Thursday, the switch hitter has strung together seven hits in his last 15 at-bats. Walker now leads all NL second basemen with 20 home runs.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Marte (elbow) entered Sunday's game as a pinch hitter and then played the final two innings in left field.
Impact: The fact he was able to bat is a good sign for fantasy owners. Though there are no guarantees he'll be back starting in left field Tuesday, it looks like he return to regular action in the coming days.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Despite giving up four hits and walking five, Volquez allowed just one earned run in seven innings Sunday. He struck out five.
Impact: He struggled with his control -- throwing only 58 of 98 pitches for strikes -- but a rare triple play helped the righty out of a jam. Volquez will face the Brewers at PNC Park in an NL Central showdown this weekend.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Melancon struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief in a non-save situation against the Cubs on Sunday.
Impact: Because the Bucs play six home games - where the team holds a 46-29 record - in the coming week, Melancon could see multiple save opportunities. The closer has notched three saves and a victory thus far in six September appearances.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lambo made his major league debut at first base Sunday, going 0-for-2 with a strikeout before being lifted for a pinch hitter.
Impact: The Pirates gave Lambo a shot at first, bypassing fellow lefty Ike Davis for a day. The results weren't particularly encouraging, but Lambo was the final link on the Bucs' first triple play in Pittsburgh since 1993. The team auditioned Lambo at first base during spring training, but the former Dodgers farmhand failed in his bid to make the team.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Worley will cede his spot in the Pirates' rotation to Charlie Morton (hernia) beginning Tuesday, MLB.com's Tom Singer reports.
Impact: Worley owns a 3.18 ERA in 16 games, including 15 starts this season, but he will be the pitcher who loses his spot in the rotation to make room for Morton. With just two weeks left in the regular season, it seems likely Worley will pitch in relief the rest of the way barring an injury.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Morton (hernia) will start Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, MLB.com's Tom Singer reports.
Impact: Morton is set to return to action after throwing a five-inning simulated game last week. He will replace Vance Worley in the Pirates' rotation, and should see two starts -- both at home -- during the upcoming week.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lambo is in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs.
Impact: Lambo will get the start over both Ike Davis and Gaby Sanchez, who have split the first-base duties since August 27. He will hit sixth in the Pirates' batting order Sunday.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Polanco is in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs.
Impact: Polanco has played sparingly in September, but he will get a start in right field Sunday. Polanco will hit eighth against Cubs starter Jacob Turner.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Marte (arm) is not in the lineup Sunday for the third straight day.
Impact: Marte remains sidelined as a result of being hit by a pitch in Thursday's game. Travis Snider will get another start in left field in Marte's place.
Sat. Sep 13, 2014 | STATS
News: Mercer went 3 for 5 with three RBIs in Friday's 7-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Impact: Mercer has gone 12 for 29 (.414) with two homers and nine RBIs over his last seven games.
Sat. Sep 13, 2014 | STATS
News: Harrison continued his breakthrough season for the Pirates, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored in Friday's 7-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Impact: Harrison is batting .387 with three homers, eight doubles and 11 RBIs over his last 17 games.
Sat. Sep 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Davis is out of the lineup again Saturday against the Cubs.
Impact: Davis will sit for the second straight day as the Cubs send their second left-handed pitcher to the mound in Felix Doubront. With the right-handed Jacob Turner on tap for the Cubs on Sunday, Davis will likely rejoin the lineup at first base.
Sat. Sep 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Marte (arm) will not be in the lineup Saturday against the Cubs, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Specifics regarding Marte's injury remain somewhat scarce, as it's currently just being labeled as left arm discomfort. However, he'll miss a second straight start Saturday and is without a timetable for a return to the lineup. He'll be available as a pinch runner.
Fri. Sep 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Mercer collected three singles and three RBI across five at-bats in Friday's 7-3 win over the Cubs.
Impact: Mercer has been on a flat-out tear at the plate in recent days, as the 28-year-old shortstop has now put together five multi-hit performances across his last seven games. Overall during this stretch, Mercer has hit .414 (12-for-29) with two homers, three doubles and nine RBI.
Fri. Sep 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cole turned in six innings Friday night versus the Cubs, allowing three earned runs on five hits and a walk while picking up six strikeouts en route to his ninth win of the season.
Impact: Since returning from a near seven-week stay on the DL back on August 20, Cole has been a steady but less than stellar presence through five turns in the Pirates' rotation. Over this span, the young right-hander has posted a 4.31 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 9.5 K/9 across 31.1 innings. Cole is slated to be back atop the mound Thursday versus the Red Sox.
Fri. Sep 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Martin is out of the lineup Friday against the Cubs.
Impact: Martin will get the day off behind the plate Friday following five straight starts, having collected at least one hit in all five. Chris Stewart will get the call behind the plate in his place and will bat eighth for the Pirates.
Fri. Sep 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Davis is out of the lineup Friday against the Cubs.
Impact: Davis will take a seat for Friday's contest with the left-handed Tsuyoshi Wada on the mound for the Cubs. Gaby Sanchez will man first base in his place and bat sixth for the Pirates.
Fri. Sep 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Marte (arm) is out of the lineup Friday against the Cubs.
Impact: Marte left Thursday's game due to discomfort in his left arm, and it appears the injury will hold him out Friday as well. Travis Snider will start in left field and bat seventh for the Pirates with Marte out.
Fri. Sep 12, 2014 | STATS
News: Marte played for the first time since he was removed Thursday with left elbow discomfort.
Impact: Marte entered as a defensive replacement in the eighth.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Walker went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk Thursday against the Phillies.
Impact: The second baseman probably should've had two RBI -- as Andrew McCutchen only advanced from second to third on his double off the center field fence. Nevertheless, he rebounded nicely from an 0-for-5 on his birthday the previous night. Walker and Robinson Cano are the only second basemen to register at least 20 doubles and 10 homers in each of the last five seasons. The Pittsburgh second baseman also needs just one dinger to reach 20 for the first time in his career.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Polanco went 1-for-3 with his 13th stolen base Thursday; he entered the game after Starling Marte was hit by a pitch.
Impact: Polanco has hit the ball better since being recalled for September, but Andrew Lambo has looked pretty good, too. The two will likely see time in right field at PNC Park during the team's nine-game home stand, which starts Friday, if Marte (elbow) can't go -- though manager Clint Hurdle would prefer that one of the two steps up and claims the role.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: McCutchen went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored Thursday in Philadelphia.
Impact: He was the object of a high and tight 96 mph fastball thrown by Luis Garcia. McCutchen narrowly avoided the bean ball to the head on a night when a number of fellow major leaguers weren't so lucky. On a positive note, McCutchen hasn't shown any noticeable effects of a rib avulsion fracture, racing around the bases during an inside-the-park homer Wednesday.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Harrison had a rough night Thursday, going hitless in five at-bats from the leadoff spot.
Impact: He's proven to be susceptible to breaking pitches in the dirt recently. Harrison is 3-for-14 since returning from an ankle surgery. The third baseman will likely find his groove shortly in a dream season, but he has expanded his strike zone in recent days.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Liriano threw eight scoreless innings Thursday, striking out a season-high 12 batters in a 4-1 win. He allowed just four hits and two walks against the Phillies.
Impact: Even prior to his sterling effort Thursday, Liriano had posted a 2.77 ERA in 65 innings and 13 starts since returning from an oblique injury July 13. The lefty has limited opponents to two earned runs in his last 27 innings and has struck out 34 batters over that span.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | STATS
News: McCutchen went 2 for 4 with a home run in Wednesday's win over Philadelphia.
Impact: He's 11 for 21 over his last five games.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Updating a previous report, Marte left Thursday's game due to discomfort in his left arm.
Impact: Marte will continue to undergo treatment, but consider the outfielder day-to-day for the time being. If he's unavailable for the series opener against the Cubs, look for Jose Tabata or Gregory Polanco to see extra playing time, although the club doesn't appear to be overly concerned at the moment.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Marte left Thursday's game after he was hit by a pitch in the first inning, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Marte was hit roughly in the forearm area, but it's difficult to tell exactly what's ailing him based on the replay. The team will likely update his status prior to the end of Thursday's game. In the meantime, Gregory Polanco entered the game to play right field, moving Travis Snider over to left to replace Marte.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Polanco remains out of the Pirates' lineup Thursday, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: This is hardly news, as Polanco has started just one game since his Sept. 2 recall to the majors. It looks like Travis Snider will continue to see most of the time in right field, but Polanco and Andrew Lambo should continue to get occasional starts.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Martin went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI in a win over the Phillies on Wednesday night.
Impact: In addition to carrying his highest slugging percentage (.421) since 2007, Martin has provided elite on-base skills (.career-high .409 OBP) while providing a stabilizing presence in the lineup during his second season in Pittsburgh.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Melancon retired the side in order in the ninth inning Wednesday to record his 28th save of the season.
Impact: With an elite 61:10 K:BB in 63 innings and 0.87 WHIP, Melancon is making his case to be considered a top-10 closer heading into 2015.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Worley struck out four and walked two while giving up three runs on four hits over five innings in a win over the Phillies on Wednesday.
Impact: The victory improved Worley's season record to 7-4, though it bumped his season ERA up to 3.18. His rebound campaign continues for the Bucs, and a two-start week is on tap for Worley, with his next start Tuesday against Boston before a Sept. 21 matchup against Milwaukee, both at home.
Wed. Sep 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Polanco is out of the lineup Wednesday.
Impact: The Pirates' right field spot is a game of musical chairs at this point, as neither Polanco, Travis Snider (Wednesday's starter) or Andrew Lambo seem to be seeing 50 percent of the at-bats, making them all difficult to start in standard weekly leagues.
Wed. Sep 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Morton (hernia) threw a five-inning, 86-pitch simulated game Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Morton reported feeling good after the simulated game, and said he believes he is ready to pitch now. Manager Clint Hurdle said the team's plan is to have Morton continue throwing bullpen sessions and simulated games before determining a return date. Hurdle also left open the possibility that Morton could return to the team out of the bullpen, though there hasn't been an official decision yet.
Wed. Sep 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Alvarez has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in the fourth metatarsal in his left foot, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: The Pirates' announcement regarding Alvarez was simply a diagnosis, and while the typical recovery for his type of injury is just 4-to-6 weeks, this effectively ends his 2014 campaign. It was a tumultuous year for the 27-year-old Alvarez, as he lost his job as the regular third baseman and hit just .231/.312/.405 in 122 games. The power was still there (18 home runs), but his future with the club is decidedly cloudy.
Wed. Sep 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Pirates have an announcement planned regarding Alvarez (foot), Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: Manager Clint Hurdle said he is not in position to deliver the news regarding Alvarez, who has not started a game since Aug. 26 due to a foot injury. It's uncertain whether the planned announcement has to do with the foot ailment, but it's a rather ominous development, regardless.
Tue. Sep 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Harrison (ankle) is in the lineup Tuesday in Philadelphia.
Impact: After three games missed due to a left ankle injury, Harrison has been cleared to lead off and man the hot corner for the Pirates. He'll attempt to uphold his success from his previous five appearances when he tallied multiple hits four times en route to a .435 (10-for-23) clip.
Tue. Sep 9, 2014 | STATS
News: Marte continued his torrid stretch, going 3 for 5 with a home run, double, and two RBIs in a 6-4 win at Philadelphia on Monday.
Impact: Marte is batting .353 over an eight-game hitting streak and is 7 for 16 in his last three games.
Tue. Sep 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: McCutchen went 3-for-4 and reached base four times Monday against Philadelphia, registering his third consecutive three-hit game.
Impact: He continues to excel despite a rib injury. McCutchen, who ranks second in the NL behind Giancarlo Stanton with a .938 OPS, has a homer in three career at-bats against Tuesday's Phillies starter, David Buchanan.
Tue. Sep 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Manager Clint Hurdle wouldn't speculate when Harrison (ankle) might return to the lineup. "We're taking it one day at a time. We'll see," Hurdle said. "Maybe I'll have different information for you Tuesday," the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: Harrison was available to pinch hit Monday but wasn't needed. The third baseman raised his batting average to .315 on Sept. 5 but hasn't played since.
Tue. Sep 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Pirates are sending tests on Alvarez (foot) back to Pittsburgh in an effort to ascertain a prognosis for the infielder, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Impact: "No update on Pedro. I'm going to wait for the medical team to get all the information that they've been putting together," manager Clint Hurdle said. "I think they were trying to get it to Pittsburgh to have our people look at it. Then we'll issue a full report with some clarity." Alvarez hasn't started a game since Aug. 26, and his return does not sound imminent.
Mon. Sep 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Mercer kept up his strong play Monday, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
Impact: Mercer has been a force for the Pirates this month, rushing three home runs and plating six runs in seven September games. The shortstop got off to a slow start this season, but is hitting .272 since the All-Star break.
Mon. Sep 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Marte had a nice day at the plate Monday, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a home run.
Impact: Marte has been scalding hot at the dish of late, cracking seven hits in his last three games to raise his batting average up to .279. The outfielder has shown a nice balance of speed and power this year, hitting 11 home runs and stealing 25 bases.

News: Locke was strong in a win Monday night, tossing seven innings of one-run ball against the Phillies.

News: Harrison (ankle) is available as a pinch-hitter Monday, Jenn Menendez of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact: While returning to pinch-hitting duty would normally seem to signal a player is close to returning to everyday action, manager Clint Hurdle didn't offer any guess as to when Harrison might eventually slot back in at third base. Brent Morel will join the lineup for the third straight game with Harrison limited to reserve duties.

News: Harrison (ankle) remains out of the lineup Monday, the Pittsburgh Tribune's Travis Sawchik reports.
Impact: He will miss his third straight game with the ankle injury, but remains day-to-day. Brent Morel will get the start at third base. Harrison has been fantastic this season in both counting stats (13 home runs and 17 steals) and batting average (.315) and will be one of the more debatable and intriguing players heading into next season based on the out-of-nowhere nature of his 2014 campaign.

News: Frieri has been released by the Pirates, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
Impact: Frieri came to Pittsburgh in a trade for former closer Jason Grilli, but didn't do enough to justify the Pirates keeping him at his current salary. Less than a year from being removed from being the closer for the Angels, Frieri is now a free agent and will have to look for work elsewhere.

Impact: Noted for a better bat from the left side, the switch-hitter actually holds a higher average right-handed (.290) than from the left side (.275). Walker now has 25 homers in his last 127 games dating back to September of 2013.

News: It appears unlikely that Alvarez (foot) will return to the lineup anytime soon after experiencing a setback during his pinch-hitting appearance Friday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Impact: "The initial diagnostic tests gave us reason to move forward as we did," general manager Neal Huntington said. "He's feeling more pain. He's not progressing the way he was before the pinch-hit at-bat. As a result, we need to re-evaluate things and see where we go from there." It sounds as though fantasy owners can bench the infielder for Week 24.
