News: The Kansas City Royals have optioned rookie infielder Christian Colon to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, opening a roster spot for Nix. The moves were made before Saturday's game against Cleveland.
Impact: The 32-year-old Nix hit .111 in 16 games with the Pirates. He began the season with Philadelphia.

News: The Kansas City Royals have optioned Colon to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, opening a roster spot for infielder Jayson Nix.
Impact: The moves were made before Saturday's game against Cleveland. Colon batted .302 in 19 games with the Royals. Nix was claimed off waivers Thursday from Pittsburgh and arrived in time for Saturday's game.
Sat. Aug 30, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Infante (shoulder) will start Saturday's game against the Indians, Joel Goldberg of FOX Sports Kansas City reports.
Impact: After testing the sore shoulder that held him out the past four games, Infante is able to manage hitting at the very least. It's unclear if he'll assume DH duty or return to his typical spot at second base.
Sat. Aug 30, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Nix was activated to the Royals' active roster Saturday.
Impact: The Royals had to activate Nix or else their waiver claim of him from the Pirates would be negated. Christian Colon was optioned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas in a corresponding move. Nix may very well see a start or two at second base this weekend with Omar Infante (shoulder) ailing, but he's hit just .133/.188/.173 in 82 plate appearances at the major league level this season.
Sat. Aug 30, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Escobar picked up four singles and one RBI in five at-bats during Friday's 6-1 loss to the Indians.
Impact: Escobar is now 7-for-18 during his modest four-game hitting streak, scoring four runs and swiping a couple of bags in the process.
Sat. Aug 30, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Vargas labored through six innings on Friday night, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out five in a loss to the Indians.
Impact: Vargas was knocked around for the second straight outing, as the veteran hurler has now given up 21 hits over his last 12 innings. Despite an abundance of baserunners, the crafty southpaw has somewhat limited the damage, allowing just seven runs (six earned) over the same span. Overall, Vargas has put up an impressive campaign for the first-place Royals and will be back on the bump Wednesday versus the Rangers.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | STATS
News: The Royals have designated Chen for assignment after six seasons with the team. Friday's move came one day after he gave up six runs in the 10th inning of an 11-5 loss to Minnesota.
Impact: The 37-year-old Chen is 2-4 with a 7.45 ERA in 13 games this season. He was in the Royals' rotation when the season began, but went on the 60-day disabled list with a back injury.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | STATS
News: Gordon went 2 for 5 with his 17th home run and two RBIs in Thursday's 11-5 loss to Minnesota.
Impact: Gordon is hitting .320 with five home runs and eight RBIs in his last 13 games.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Chen was designated for assignment Friday.
Impact: Chen struggled in his last relief outing, allowing six earned runs in just one inning of work. The horrid inning raised his ERA to 7.45 on the season, a number that is too high to overlook at the major league level. He will now have to decide whether to accept his assignment or look for work with another club.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Coleman was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Friday.
Impact: Coleman will take the place of Bruce Chen on the active roster, who was designated for assignment Friday. He has spent a good amount of time with the big league club, posting a 7.48 ERA and 2.03 WHIP over 21.2 innings with the club. Coleman fared better at the minor league level, however, posting a 3.86 ERA and 1.12 WHIP at that level.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hosmer (hand) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Saturday, Jeffrey Flanagan of FOX Sports Kansas City reports.
Impact: X-rays taken earlier in the week on Hosmer's injured hand came back negative, and he is set to resume playing in games. The Royals have not announced when he will return to the big club, but with the team in the playoff hunt, and Hosmer indicating he wants to see around 20 at-bats, he is on track to be back with the Royals sometime next week.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | STATS
News: Mariot was placed on the 60-day DL with a strained right hamstring.
Impact: Mariot is an afterthought when it comes to fantasy baseball.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Guthrie struggled against Minnesota on Thursday, surrendering five runs and nine hits in six innings. He needed 103 pitches, striking out five.
Impact: Guthrie gave up a couple of runs in the first inning, and never really got into a groove. He has been extremely up and down in his last seven outings, mixing in great starts with clunkers. In his next turn, he'll square off against a Texas team that he dominated over eight innings on Aug. 23.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | STATS
News: Downs has been activated from the disabled list.
Impact: Downs was out with a stiff neck.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | STATS
News: The Kansas City Royals claimed infielder Jayson Nix off waivers Thursday from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Impact: Nix hit .133 in 34 games this season with the Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies. He is a career .214 hitter in seven big league seasons. He's also played for Colorado, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland and Toronto.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Royals claimed Nix off waivers from the Pirates on Thursday.
Impact: Nix was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh on Monday, but he's back on a 40-man roster and should assume a bench role with Kansas City no later than next week. Now 32, Nix has hit just .133/.188/.173 in the majors this season, but can play all around the diamond.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hendriks was optioned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Thursday.
Impact: Filling in for Yordano Ventura (back) on Wednesday, Hendriks gave up just one run on four hits and zero walk, while striking out five over seven innings, in a no-decision against the Twins. Since he wasn't going to be available for several days anyway, the Royals went ahead and sent Hendriks to the minors to clear room for Scott Downs (neck), but Hendriks can return as soon as next Tuesday.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Downs (neck) was activated from the 15-day DL on Thursday.
Impact: A cervical facet sprain forced Downs out of action in early August, but he made it through a live session without issue earlier this week and thus received the green light to return to the Royals' bullpen. Downs' overall numbers this season are ugly, but he's held opposing lefties to a .211/.282/.338 batting line, so he should have little trouble holding onto a specialist role.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI Wednesday in a 6-1 win over the Twins.
Impact: Perez' two-run triple capped off a six-run eighth inning for the Royals. The 24-year-old is having a poor month while dealing with some knee discomfort, hitting .221/.233/.395 in 23 August games.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hendriks gave up a run on four hits while striking out five over seven innings Wednesday against the Twins.
Impact: Hendriks filled in admirably for Yordano Ventura, who was skipped due to a stiff back. The Australian native was 1-0 with a 6.08 ERA in three starts for the Blue Jays earlier this year. It remains to be seen whether Ventura will be able to make his next start Monday versus the Rangers. If not, Hendriks has earned another turn.
Wed. Aug 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Willingham is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Twins, Josh Vernier of 610 Sports Radio reports.
Impact: After he was dropped from the lineup the previous two games, Willingham returned to a starting role Tuesday but failed to capitalize on it, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. He's slashing a respectable .282/.364/.538 over 13 games with the Royals, but manager Ned Yost still seems hesitant to turn DH duties over to him on a permanent basis. He'll continue to work in a timeshare with Raul Ibanez, who will enter the lineup Wednesday.
Wed. Aug 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cain is out of the lineup Wednesday versus the Twins, Josh Vernier of FOX Sports Kansas City reports.
Impact: Since his last absence Aug. 17, Cain's posted a .308 average (8-for-26), two RBI, three runs, and two steals. In his stead, Nori Aoki is handling right field and batting leadoff.
Wed. Aug 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Crow was optioned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday.
Impact: Crow has been hammered in three of his past four appearances, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk to go with one strikeout in 3.1 innings. Although he's been the weak link of an otherwise stellar bullpen, he'll likely return to the Royals once rosters expand in September.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Davis pitched a scoreless ninth inning and claimed his seventh win of the season Tuesday vs. the Twins after teammate Alex Gordon smacked a walk-off homer in the bottom half of the frame.
Impact: With an 0.78 ERA and 13.5 K/9 rate over 57.1 innings, Davis has arguably been the best reliever in baseball -- closer or not. Perhaps most incredibly, he's given up just two extra-base hits in this season, both of which were doubles.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Duffy took no decision Tuesday against the Twins, giving up one run over 6.2 innings while striking out four.
Impact: Thanks to a 10:5 groundball-to-flyball ratio in the outing, Duffy was able to generate two double plays and help hold runners at bay. Duffy has generally been an extreme flyball pitcher and owns a relatively weak 6.8 K/9 rate, but his favorable home park has aided him in maintaining a 2.47 ERA that probably isn't indicative of his true talent level.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gordon hit a two-run walk-off home run as the Royals defeated the Twins on Tuesday.
Impact: Gordon's blast off Glen Perkins ended the Twins' shutout bid and enabled the Royals to maintain their division lead over the Tigers. The 30-year-old's overall numbers (.283 average, 16 homers, 59 RBI, eight stolen bases) wouldn't suggest that he's in the midst of the career-best season, but his 5.6 WAR on the campaign ranks right up there with leading MVP candidates Mike Trout and Giancarlo Stanton.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | STATS
News: Infante was held out of the lineup for Tuesday night's series opener against Minnesota with shoulder inflammation.
Impact: He's considered day to day.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | STATS
News: Ventura will miss his next start due to soreness in his back, and Liam Hendricks will make his first start for the club Wednesday since arriving in a trade from Toronto.
Impact: The emergence of Ventura has been one of the reasons Kansas City has climbed into first place in the AL Central. The hard-throwing rookie is 10-9 with a 3.40 ERA this season. Royals manager Ned Yost said he hopes that Ventura will only need to miss one start.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Infante has been dealing with shoulder inflammation and will miss the next three days, according to manager Ned Yost, AM 610's Josh Vernier reports.
Impact: Yost said Infante has been dealing with the inflammation for "two or three weeks," and given Infante's age (32), it's not surprising the Royals will give him a few days to rest. Christian Colon will start at second base Tuesday.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hendriks will fill Yordano Ventura's (back) open spot in the rotation Wednesday against the Twins, Blair Kerkhoff of The Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Facing the organization (the Twins) that signed him out of Australia, Hendriks will look to improve upon the three nods made for the Blue Jays earlier this season (nine runs on 12 hits and four walks to go with eight strikeouts in 13.1 innings). He's fared much better since he was dealt to the Royals before the trade deadline, posting a 2.83 ERA, 1.114 WHIP and 35:6 BB:K in 35 innings (five starts) at Triple-A Omaha.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ventura has been scratched from Wednesday's start against the Twins due to mid-back stiffness, Blair Kerkhoff of The Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: If his recent outings are any indication -- he's tossed six consecutive quality starts -- Ventura didn't appear to be ailing, but his 37:18 K:BB during that stretch wasn't in line with his mark prior to that stretch (88:35). While the time off may reign in his control, Liam Hendricks will take on Ventura's opening in the rotation Wednesday.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Infante is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Josh Vernier of Fox Sports KC reports.
Impact: With Infante on the bench, Christian Colon will start at second base, while shortstop Alcides Escobar will move up in the order to bat second for manager Ned Yost on Tuesday night.
Mon. Aug 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Nix was designated for assignment on Monday.
Impact: With Clint Barmes (groin) returning from the DL on Monday, Nix was DFA'd to clear room on the roster. The veteran has appeared in 16 games for the Pirates after signing earlier this month and is hitting just .111 with four strikeouts in 36 at-bats.
Mon. Aug 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Aoki is out of the lineup Monday versus the Yankees, Josh Vernier of FOX Sports KC reports.
Impact: Aoki is sitting for the third time in five games, which may have been spurred by his current 0-for-14 stretch at the plate. In his stead, Lorenzo Cain will cover right field, while Jarrod Dyson mans center.
Mon. Aug 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Moustakas provided all of the offense for the Royals on Monday, launching a solo home run off of Michael Pineda.
Impact: The home run was Moustakas' 15th of the season, and the third baseman has now hit safely in six straight games. Moustakas has had a rough go of things this season, but has managed to raise his average to .208 thanks to his recent strong play.
Mon. Aug 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Shields took the loss Monday, allowing six runs in 6.1 innings against the Yankees.
Impact: Shields' bad start comes as a surprise, as the veteran righty had logged six straight quality starts and hadn't allowed more than three earned runs in a start since July 1. Shields will try to right the ship against the Indians his next time out.
Mon. Aug 25, 2014 | STATS
News: Hosmer has been cleared to begin swinging a bat after missing the past month with a stress fracture in his right hand.
Impact: Hosmer had another round of X-rays before the Royals' game against the Yankees on Monday, and they showed enough progress that he can begin taking dry swings. The hope is that Hosmer can ramp it up to hitting off a tee and in the cage in the next week.
Mon. Aug 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Willingham is out of the lineup for a second straight game Monday against the Yankees, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Willingham is 1-for-6 with three strikeouts in his career against Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda, but that wouldn't seem significant enough to justify his absence from the lineup. The Royals haven't passed along any word that Willingham is dealing with an injury, so it seems manager Ned Yost simply preferred to roll with Raul Ibanez at DH for the second straight game for reasons unbeknownst to the rest of us.
Mon. Aug 25, 2014 | STATS
News: Guthrie gave up a home run on his first pitch and not much else, pitching the Kansas City Royals past the Texas Rangers 6-3 on Saturday night for their 24th win in 30 games.
Impact: Guthrie (10-10, 4.32 ERA) allowed the lone run, five hits and one walk in eight innings. He is 5-1 with a 3.57 ERA in his last six starts.
Aug 24, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Vargas surrendered 11 hits and three runs (two earned) against the Rangers on Sunday. He had three strikeouts and four walks, taking the loss.
Impact: Vargas entered Sunday's start on a roll, having allowed only three earned runs over his previous 21 innings. However, the southpaw struggled with his location against Texas and paid for it. Vargas will next take the bump Friday against Cleveland.
Aug 24, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Butler hit a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Rangers.
Impact: Butler accounted for all of his team's offense, as Scott Baker and the Texas bullpen combined to hold the Royals to six hits. Butler, slashing .277/.326/.391 on the year, has homered in two of his last three games.
Aug 24, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hosmer (hand) will undergo another X-ray on Monday, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Doctors will evaluate how far Hosmer has come along in his healing process from the stress fracture. If his hand checks out OK, he could soon begin a hitting program, with an eye on returning to the Royals in September.
Aug 24, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Willingham is out of the lineup Sunday against the Rangers, Joel Goldberg of FOX Sports Kansas City reports.
Impact: Willingham will sit following his first hitless start since Aug. 14. Raul Ibanez gets the start as the designated hitter and will bat sixth for the Royals on Sunday.
Sat. Aug 23, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Dyson went 1-for-3 with a walk and a career-high three RBI on Saturday against the Rangers.
Impact: Dyson drove in a career-high three runs with a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning and a two-run single in the seventh to chase Rangers starter Nick Tepesch out of the game. Known more for his speed on the basepaths rather than his ability to drive in runs, Dyson is hitting a healthy .367 for the month of August with seven RBI, which is more than any other month this season.
Sat. Aug 23, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Guthrie allowed one earned run over eight innings, giving up five hits and a walk while striking out two, to pick up the win against Texas on Saturday.
Impact: Guthrie gave up a leadoff home run to Shin-Soo Choo on his first pitch of the game, but then proceeded to retire the next 12 batters as he dominated the Rangers over eight innings. It was Guthrie's fifth win in his last six starts. For the season, he has a 4.32 ERA and 107:42 K:BB.
Sat. Aug 23, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez is not in the starting lineup Saturday, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: The Royals haven't provided a reason for Perez's absence, but he went 0-for-5 on Friday after being held out of Wednesday's lineup and having an MRI (which came back negative) on Thursday. Erik Kratz will bat seventh and starting behind the plate Saturday night.
Sat. Aug 23, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Aoki is not in the starting lineup Saturday, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: With Aoki on the bench against right-hander Nick Tepesch, the Royals will use Jarrod Dyson in center field and slide Lorenzo Cain over to play right.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Holland recorded his MLB-leading 40th save Friday night.
Impact: Despite issuing a walk, Holland recorded the final three outs with just 15 pitches. With elite ratios, good control and the ability to miss plenty of bats, Holland has secured his place among the league's premier closers with an encore similar to his 2013 campaign.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez went 0-for-5 with an RBI while catching all nine innings against the Rangers on Friday night.
Impact: After being scratched from the lineup Wednesday with knee discomfort, the Royals sent Perez for an MRI, which came back negative. That he was already back behind the dish Friday suggests that the Royals are not overly concerned about wearing him down during the final five weeks of the season.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ventura struck out six and walked three while giving up one run on four hits over six innings Friday night to record his 10th win of the season.
Impact: While the production this season hasn't necessarily met the sky-high expectations for the rookie right-hander, Ventura has put together a strong campaign despite a scare with his elbow earlier this season. Through 25 appearances (24 starts), he's now toting a 3.40 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 125 strikeouts in 145.2 innings. He's also reeled off a stretch of six straight quality starts, while carrying a 37:18 K:BB in 38 innings during that span. Ventura will face the Twins in a home start his next time out.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Downs (neck) will throw a live bullpen session when the team returns home Monday, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports.
Impact: He will also be eligible to come off the DL for the upcoming homestand, so we could see him back in the Royals' stacked bullpen in short order.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez (knee) is in the lineup Friday against the Rangers, Fox Sports Kansas City's Joel Goldberg reports.
Impact: He was scratched from Wednesday's game with knee discomfort, but an MRI came back negative on the knee, and he will waste no time getting back behind the dish for the Royals. Perez has had a very productive year, based primarily on the fact that he's been able to play in 115 games. He is hitting .268 with 15 home runs, 50 runs and 54 RBI.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: An MRI on Perez's knee came back negative Thursday, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports.
Impact: The Royals only sent Perez in for an MRI as a precaution, and it verified that there were no issues with the catcher's knee beyond the discomfort he's experiencing. Perez could need a few more days away from catching before the pain dissipates completely, but the Royals could try to keep his bat in the lineup by using him at DH. Either way, any amount of time Perez misses behind the plate will equate to more starts for backup catcher Erik Kratz.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Duffy (8-11) had a tough night Wednesday, allowing five runs (only one earned) while walking one and striking out six over seven innings in a loss to the Rockies.
Impact: Third baseman Christian Colon's error led to a Matt McBride grand slam that put Duffy and the Royals away in the sixth inning. The left-hander has been fantastic this year, giving up more than four runs only twice since May 28. Duffy will face the Twins on Tuesday.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez (knee) will undergo an MRI on his injured knee Thursday, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Manager Ned Yost maintains that Perez is not dealing with a serious injury, but apparently the Royals want him to take another trip to the doctor to be sure. Expect an update on Perez's status when the results of his examination become available.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez was a late scratch Wednesday with right knee discomfort, Fox Sports Kansas City's Joel Goldberg reports.
Impact: Erik Kratz will get the start at catcher, with the team saying Perez's scratch is a precaution. Perez reportedly felt good Tuesday night, but apparently that changed in the morning.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Moustakas is not in the lineup Wednesday, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports.
Impact: Moustakas has five hits in his last five starts but doesn't have an extra-base hit since Aug. 9, and has only three extra-base hits this month. Christian Colon will get the start at third.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Aoki is not in the lineup Wednesday, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports.
Impact: Josh Willingham will get the start in right field, with the DH not an option in Colorado. Aoki has reclaimed the everyday job in right, but has just one hit in his last 11 at-bats, which may have prompted the day off.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Shields pitched six innings Tuesday against the Rockies, allowing two runs on nine hits and one walk, while striking out six en route to his 12th win of the season.
Impact: Shields has hit a groove at the same time his team is surging, as he has thrown six straight quality outings while not allowing more than three earned runs in any of his last nine starts. In the process, Shields has lowered his ERA to 3.28 on the year. His next start is set for Monday at home against the Yankees.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Infante had himself a heck of a day at the plate Tuesday against the Rockies, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, four RBI and a run scored.
Impact: Prior to Tuesday's outburst, Infante had been mired in a 4-for-37 slump. So, maybe this game can get him going. His .258/.297/.361 slash line in 407 at-bats this year still leaves a lot to be desired.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Holland recorded the last out of Tuesday's game against the Rockies to secure his 39th save of the year.
Impact: With Tuesday's game against the Rockies getting interesting late, the Royals wasted no time getting Holland in there to record the final out. Holland now has 39 saves, a 1.82 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP and an astounding 70:16 K:BB ratio in 49.1 innings pitched this season.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | STATS
News: Kratz hit a pinch-hit home run in the seventh, stayed in the game and homered in his next at-bat in the ninth in Monday's 6-4 win over Minnesota.
Impact: In six games with Kansas City, the catcher is 6 for 13.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Willingham is out of the lineup Tuesday at Colorado, Andy McCullough of The Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Since joining the Royals last week, Willingham has played DH, hitting .333/.385/.583 with one homer, five RBI, four runs and one stolen base in 24 at-bats. However, with nine strikeouts during that stretch, his free-swinging ways haven't been quelled. In any case, the Royals are in a National League park Tuesday and Wednesday, likely leaving him to pinch hit until this weekend in Texas.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez (knee) is back in the lineup Tuesday in Colorado, Andy McCullough of The Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Removed from Monday's contest due to a sore right knee, Perez will brush off the ailment, taking on catching duties and batting third in the lineup. Prior to the abbreviated outing, he had put together hits in three of four games, batting .294 (5-for-17) with one homer, three RBI and two runs.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Kratz blasted his fourth and fifth home runs of the season Monday against the Twins.
Impact: Kratz entered the game in the seventh for Salvador Perez, who had a knee injury. The catcher is batting .234 on the year and could see more at-bats if Perez is out for an extended period.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Vargas pitched seven strong innings Monday en route to his 10th win of the season, allowing a run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts against the Twins.
Impact: It's the second dynamite start in a row for Vargas, whose ERA is down to 3.17. The left-hander only strikes out 5.93 batters per nine innings but has an excellent 1.80 walk rate. Vargas will go again Sunday in Texas.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | STATS
News: Perez was back in action Tuesday.
Impact: Perez had two hits and two RBIs before leaving in the seventh inning Monday. Manager Ned Yost said Perez tweaked a tendon in his knee while running the bases in the fifth, but was removed purely as a precaution.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez left Monday's game against the Twins in the seventh inning with right knee discomfort, Joel Goldberg of FOX Sports Kansas City reports.
Impact: The Royals are just labeling Perez's removal as a precautionary measure, with a reevaluation likely coming prior to Tuesday's game. Perez has been one of the more heavily-used catchers over the last two seasons, so it's somewhat inevitable that he accrues some bumps and bruises along the way. Assuming the injury isn't more serious than it initially appears, the Royals will likely be content to give Perez a few days off should he require them.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cain is expected to start Tuesday and Wednesday against the Rockies, who will be starting a couple lefties, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports.
Impact: He is out of the starting lineup Monday for the fourth time in five games, but manager Ned Yost says there's nothing physically wrong with Cain, he just likes the way Jarrod Dyson is swinging the bat. Cain has an .813 OPS against southpaws this season, versus a .713 OPS against righties, but his numbers against righties are still as good or better than Dyson's, so it's got to be a little frustrating for Cain's owners that he now seems to be on the soft side of a platoon in center field.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Dyson will start Monday for the fourth time in five games, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: A recent slump by Lorenzo Cain has dropped his batting average below .300 and put his job as the starting center fielder on notice, with Dyson representing the greatest beneficiary. Even in mostly part-time duty this season, Dyson has managed to steal 27 bases in 31 attempts, a total that could sharply rise over the final months if he's able to stave off Cain for playing time. It's possible the two players end up settling into some sort of lefty-righty platoon, with Dyson receiving the larger share of at-bats as the lefty hitter in the arrangement.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Willingham went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored in a victory over the Twins on Sunday.

News: Guthrie earned the winning decision against Minnesota on Sunday, allowing five hits and four runs with seven strikeouts and two walks over seven innings.
Impact: It was a nice bounce-back effort from Guthrie after he was shellacked for 11 hits and six runs (four earned) by Oakland last week. The right-hander has followed up a terrible month of July (10.07 ERA) to post a 3.38 ERA and 21:4 K:BB ratio through four August assignments. Guthrie's next start comes on Saturday in Texas.

News: Holland admitted that he's dealing with fatigue, but says he'll "continue to answer the call" for the Royals, the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Holland has tossed 48.1 innings for the Royals this season after logging exactly 67 in back-to-back seasons prior to this year. He pitched on consecutive days Thursday and Friday, and the fatigue was made apparent Friday night, when he allowed a run on two hits and a walk. A lack of command seemed to be the issue, and pitching coach Dave Eiland noticed in that outing that his arm speed appeared to have noticeably decreased. For now, the AL saves leader will continue to pitch for the Royals as the team attempts to lock up a playoff spot, but one must consider the possibility of a conservative approach for Holland down the stretch. Holland will have an important role if the team does make the playoffs, but in the meantime it's possible that Wade Davis or Kelvin Herrera see a save opportunity in an effort to preserve his arm for the long run.

News: Cain is out of the lineup Sunday against the Twins, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Cain will sit for the third time in four days after an 0-for-4, four-strikeout performance Saturday. Despite the golden sombrero, he is still hitting .298/.336/.407 on the season, so his frequent absence from the lineup is a bit puzzling, but given Jarrod Dyson's performance in his place (hitting .291/.336/.355), it wouldn't be surprising to see the time split continue.

News: Ventura gave up three runs over 6.2 innings with six walks and four strikeouts in Saturday's loss to Minnesota.
Impact: The six walks were a career high for Ventura, and he has 10 walks in his last two starts. However, we wouldn't be too concerned since he had been on a roll with a 2.84 ERA and 27:9 K:BB in 25.1 innings in his four previous starts.
