News: Downs (neck) will throw a live bullpen session when the team returns home Monday, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports.
Impact: He will also be eligible to come off the DL for the upcoming homestand, so we could see him back in the Royals' stacked bullpen in short order.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez (knee) is in the lineup Friday against the Rangers, Fox Sports Kansas City's Joel Goldberg reports.
Impact: He was scratched from Wednesday's game with knee discomfort, but an MRI came back negative on the knee, and he will waste no time getting back behind the dish for the Royals. Perez has had a very productive year, based primarily on the fact that he's been able to play in 115 games. He is hitting .268 with 15 home runs, 50 runs and 54 RBI.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: An MRI on Perez's knee came back negative Thursday, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports.
Impact: The Royals only sent Perez in for an MRI as a precaution, and it verified that there were no issues with the catcher's knee beyond the discomfort he's experiencing. Perez could need a few more days away from catching before the pain dissipates completely, but the Royals could try to keep his bat in the lineup by using him at DH. Either way, any amount of time Perez misses behind the plate will equate to more starts for backup catcher Erik Kratz.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Duffy (8-11) had a tough night Wednesday, allowing five runs (only one earned) while walking one and striking out six over seven innings in a loss to the Rockies.
Impact: Third baseman Christian Colon's error led to a Matt McBride grand slam that put Duffy and the Royals away in the sixth inning. The left-hander has been fantastic this year, giving up more than four runs only twice since May 28. Duffy will face the Twins on Tuesday.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez (knee) will undergo an MRI on his injured knee Thursday, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Manager Ned Yost maintains that Perez is not dealing with a serious injury, but apparently the Royals want him to take another trip to the doctor to be sure. Expect an update on Perez's status when the results of his examination become available.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez was a late scratch Wednesday with right knee discomfort, Fox Sports Kansas City's Joel Goldberg reports.
Impact: Erik Kratz will get the start at catcher, with the team saying Perez's scratch is a precaution. Perez reportedly felt good Tuesday night, but apparently that changed in the morning.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Moustakas is not in the lineup Wednesday, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports.
Impact: Moustakas has five hits in his last five starts but doesn't have an extra-base hit since Aug. 9, and has only three extra-base hits this month. Christian Colon will get the start at third.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Aoki is not in the lineup Wednesday, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports.
Impact: Josh Willingham will get the start in right field, with the DH not an option in Colorado. Aoki has reclaimed the everyday job in right, but has just one hit in his last 11 at-bats, which may have prompted the day off.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Shields pitched six innings Tuesday against the Rockies, allowing two runs on nine hits and one walk, while striking out six en route to his 12th win of the season.
Impact: Shields has hit a groove at the same time his team is surging, as he has thrown six straight quality outings while not allowing more than three earned runs in any of his last nine starts. In the process, Shields has lowered his ERA to 3.28 on the year. His next start is set for Monday at home against the Yankees.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Infante had himself a heck of a day at the plate Tuesday against the Rockies, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, four RBI and a run scored.
Impact: Prior to Tuesday's outburst, Infante had been mired in a 4-for-37 slump. So, maybe this game can get him going. His .258/.297/.361 slash line in 407 at-bats this year still leaves a lot to be desired.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Holland recorded the last out of Tuesday's game against the Rockies to secure his 39th save of the year.
Impact: With Tuesday's game against the Rockies getting interesting late, the Royals wasted no time getting Holland in there to record the final out. Holland now has 39 saves, a 1.82 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP and an astounding 70:16 K:BB ratio in 49.1 innings pitched this season.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | STATS
News: Kratz hit a pinch-hit home run in the seventh, stayed in the game and homered in his next at-bat in the ninth in Monday's 6-4 win over Minnesota.
Impact: In six games with Kansas City, the catcher is 6 for 13.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Willingham is out of the lineup Tuesday at Colorado, Andy McCullough of The Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Since joining the Royals last week, Willingham has played DH, hitting .333/.385/.583 with one homer, five RBI, four runs and one stolen base in 24 at-bats. However, with nine strikeouts during that stretch, his free-swinging ways haven't been quelled. In any case, the Royals are in a National League park Tuesday and Wednesday, likely leaving him to pinch hit until this weekend in Texas.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez (knee) is back in the lineup Tuesday in Colorado, Andy McCullough of The Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Removed from Monday's contest due to a sore right knee, Perez will brush off the ailment, taking on catching duties and batting third in the lineup. Prior to the abbreviated outing, he had put together hits in three of four games, batting .294 (5-for-17) with one homer, three RBI and two runs.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Kratz blasted his fourth and fifth home runs of the season Monday against the Twins.
Impact: Kratz entered the game in the seventh for Salvador Perez, who had a knee injury. The catcher is batting .234 on the year and could see more at-bats if Perez is out for an extended period.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Vargas pitched seven strong innings Monday en route to his 10th win of the season, allowing a run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts against the Twins.
Impact: It's the second dynamite start in a row for Vargas, whose ERA is down to 3.17. The left-hander only strikes out 5.93 batters per nine innings but has an excellent 1.80 walk rate. Vargas will go again Sunday in Texas.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | STATS
News: Perez was back in action Tuesday.
Impact: Perez had two hits and two RBIs before leaving in the seventh inning Monday. Manager Ned Yost said Perez tweaked a tendon in his knee while running the bases in the fifth, but was removed purely as a precaution.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez left Monday's game against the Twins in the seventh inning with right knee discomfort, Joel Goldberg of FOX Sports Kansas City reports.
Impact: The Royals are just labeling Perez's removal as a precautionary measure, with a reevaluation likely coming prior to Tuesday's game. Perez has been one of the more heavily-used catchers over the last two seasons, so it's somewhat inevitable that he accrues some bumps and bruises along the way. Assuming the injury isn't more serious than it initially appears, the Royals will likely be content to give Perez a few days off should he require them.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cain is expected to start Tuesday and Wednesday against the Rockies, who will be starting a couple lefties, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports.
Impact: He is out of the starting lineup Monday for the fourth time in five games, but manager Ned Yost says there's nothing physically wrong with Cain, he just likes the way Jarrod Dyson is swinging the bat. Cain has an .813 OPS against southpaws this season, versus a .713 OPS against righties, but his numbers against righties are still as good or better than Dyson's, so it's got to be a little frustrating for Cain's owners that he now seems to be on the soft side of a platoon in center field.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Dyson will start Monday for the fourth time in five games, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: A recent slump by Lorenzo Cain has dropped his batting average below .300 and put his job as the starting center fielder on notice, with Dyson representing the greatest beneficiary. Even in mostly part-time duty this season, Dyson has managed to steal 27 bases in 31 attempts, a total that could sharply rise over the final months if he's able to stave off Cain for playing time. It's possible the two players end up settling into some sort of lefty-righty platoon, with Dyson receiving the larger share of at-bats as the lefty hitter in the arrangement.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Willingham went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored in a victory over the Twins on Sunday.
Impact: Willingham, slotting in the sixth spot in the order again, has had a productive series against his old team so far, going 3-for-9 with the homer, two doubles and five RBI. He's now slashing .214/.344/.416 this season.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gordon went 2-for-4 with a homer, a triple, two RBI and three runs scored in Sunday's 12-6 win over Minnesota.
Impact: It was Gordon's third consecutive multihit effort. The outfielder has been terrific since the All-Star break, hitting .337 (35-for-104) with four homers, four doubles, 11 RBI, eight walks and two stolen bases.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Guthrie earned the winning decision against Minnesota on Sunday, allowing five hits and four runs with seven strikeouts and two walks over seven innings.
Impact: It was a nice bounce-back effort from Guthrie after he was shellacked for 11 hits and six runs (four earned) by Oakland last week. The right-hander has followed up a terrible month of July (10.07 ERA) to post a 3.38 ERA and 21:4 K:BB ratio through four August assignments. Guthrie's next start comes on Saturday in Texas.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Holland admitted that he's dealing with fatigue, but says he'll "continue to answer the call" for the Royals, the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Holland has tossed 48.1 innings for the Royals this season after logging exactly 67 in back-to-back seasons prior to this year. He pitched on consecutive days Thursday and Friday, and the fatigue was made apparent Friday night, when he allowed a run on two hits and a walk. A lack of command seemed to be the issue, and pitching coach Dave Eiland noticed in that outing that his arm speed appeared to have noticeably decreased. For now, the AL saves leader will continue to pitch for the Royals as the team attempts to lock up a playoff spot, but one must consider the possibility of a conservative approach for Holland down the stretch. Holland will have an important role if the team does make the playoffs, but in the meantime it's possible that Wade Davis or Kelvin Herrera see a save opportunity in an effort to preserve his arm for the long run.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cain is out of the lineup Sunday against the Twins, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Cain will sit for the third time in four days after an 0-for-4, four-strikeout performance Saturday. Despite the golden sombrero, he is still hitting .298/.336/.407 on the season, so his frequent absence from the lineup is a bit puzzling, but given Jarrod Dyson's performance in his place (hitting .291/.336/.355), it wouldn't be surprising to see the time split continue.
Sat. Aug 16, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Aoki went 2-for-4 with his 14th stolen base in Saturday's loss to Minnesota.
Impact: After a disappointing first half of the season, Aoki has been hot in the second half as he's hitting .329 (27-for-82) with 14 RBI and 15 runs scored in his last 23 games.
Sat. Aug 16, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ventura gave up three runs over 6.2 innings with six walks and four strikeouts in Saturday's loss to Minnesota.
Impact: The six walks were a career high for Ventura, and he has 10 walks in his last two starts. However, we wouldn't be too concerned since he had been on a roll with a 2.84 ERA and 27:9 K:BB in 25.1 innings in his four previous starts.
Sat. Aug 16, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Willingham is out of the lineup Saturday at Minnesota, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Willingham is sitting for the first time since joining the Royals, handing over DH to Raul Ibanez. In his last six appearances, Willingham has tallied a hit on five occasions, batting .217 (5-for-23) with one homer, five RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Escobar went 2-for-3 with three RBI against the Twins on Friday.
Impact: There wasn't much offense on the night other than the Royals getting run-driving RBI help from Escobar and Willingham (three RBI each in the game on Friday). Escobar raised his batting average to .277 on the season with the big night.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Willingham went 1-for-4 with three RBI against the Twins on Friday.
Impact: It was Willingham's first respectable game since joining the Royals in a trade earlier in the week. It took hitting off his old team to make it a contributing night, but Willingham's bases-clearing double in the fourth inning put the Twins away early. Willingham (.210/.349/.399) won't get full-time at-bats moving forward so he's not to be trusted fully in an everyday lineup.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Duffy gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits over 5.1 innings pitched on Friday against the Twins as he picked up his eighth win of the season.
Impact: It was obvious that manager Ned Yost didn't want Duffy heading too deep into the late innings, especially when you consider Duffy only threw 79 pitches on the night. Duffy's ERA currently sits at 2.60 on the season.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Holland pitched one full inning to earn his 37th save on Friday facing the Twins, while giving up two runs on one hit.
Impact: It was Holland's first major hiccup in quite some time, dating back to June 20 against Seattle when he gave up a couple of runs. He still remains one of the best closers in the game despite his poor showing on Friday. Stay strong with Holland in your everyday lineup.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cain is out of the lineup again Friday, Andy McCollugh of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Cain missed Thursday's contest as well and is out Friday again. There isn't any indication of an injury on Cain's part, and the benching isn't likely due to performance, so it's unclear why he is sitting again. Unless there is an underlying injury the team hasn't revealed, Cain will likely rejoin the lineup in the near future.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Shields didn't factor into the decision Thursday after allowing three runs on seven hits over six innings in an eventual win over the A's.
Impact: Shields actually left trailing 3-2, but a five-run rally helped the Royals to their 18th win in 22 games. Nonetheless, it's his fifth straight quality start. He'll draw a home date with the Rockies on Tuesday.
Thu. Aug 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Manager Ned Yost said Hosmer (hand) will not be cleared to swing for another week, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Hosmer underwent an X-ray on Thursday, which apparently showed he hadn't sufficiently recovered enough to resume baseball activities. The first baseman was first given a three-to-six-week recovery timetable upon his placement on the DL, but at this point, it seems things could be trending toward the far end of that range.
Thu. Aug 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Infante went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer Wednesday in a 3-0 win over the A's.
Impact: Infante's long ball was all the offense the Royals needed behind a stellar performance from starting pitcher Jason Vargas. The 32-year-old, who was in a 1-for-16 slump before Wednesday, is hitting .260/.300/.362 on the year.
Thu. Aug 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Vargas (9-5) tossed a three-hit shutout Wednesday against the Athletics, striking out four without a walk.
Impact: Vargas was straight nasty Wednesday, getting the first-place Royals back in the win column one game after they'd snapped their eight-game winning streak. The lefty ended the contest by retiring 23 consecutive batters. Vargas next toes the rubber Monday in Minnesota.
Thu. Aug 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cain is out of the lineup Thursday against the As, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Cain has started back-to-back games, but will give way to Jarrod Dyson for the third time in the last five contests. This likely isn't performance-based, however, as Cain has hit .303 in August, and is slashing .297/.336/.408 on the year.
Thu. Aug 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Perez is out of the lineup Thursday against the As, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Even for a catcher, Perez rarely gets a day off, as he's started 10 straight for manager Ned Yost. He'll take a seat Thursday for a day game following a night game, with Erik Kratz set to take over behind the plate.
Thu. Aug 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Infante is out of the lineup Thursday against the Athletics, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Infante hasn't had a day off since July 6, so a maintenance day was likely overdue. Despite four multi-hit games in August, he's still hitting just .229 on the month, and .260 on the season. He logged hit No. 100 in Wednesday's game, but will rest Thursday in favor of Christian Colon.
Wed. Aug 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Moustakas is not in the lineup Wednesday versus the A's, Fox Sports reports.
Impact: It looks to be a scheduled day off for Moustakas, who has started all but one game since July 22. While he's struck out only three times in 37 August at-bats, Moustakas is hitting only .216 on the month and a paltry .199 on the season (317 at-bats). Christian Colon gets the nod at third base Wednesday.
Wed. Aug 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Manager Ned Yost said that Willingham will serve as the Royals' primary DH until Eric Hosmer (hand) returns to the lineup, Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star reports.
Impact: Monday's acquisition of Willingham doesn't address the huge defensive dropoff with Billy Butler at first base instead of Eric Hosmer, but it does at least scrub Raul Ibanez and his sickly .164/.252/.292 season line from the Royals lineup. Willingham debuted with his new team Tuesday against the Athletics, slotting sixth in the order and collecting a double in his four at-bats.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | STATS
News: Downs has been placed on the DL with a stiff neck.
Impact: The injury is officially being called a cervical facet sprain. He started the season with the White Sox, who dumped him before the Royals picked up the journeyman.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Downs was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday due to a cervical facet sprain.
Impact: Downs hasn't been utilized since Aug. 2, meaning he could be available next Monday in Minnesota, if all goes well. In 50 games between the White Sox and Royals, he cranked out a 5.29 ERA, 1.471 WHIP and 25:19 K:BB. When he eventually returns, though, middle relief is his ceiling.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Holland saved his 35th game of the year Monday as the Royals beat the A's, 3-2.
Impact: This was perhaps Holland's most important save of the year as the Royals took first place in the AL Central. The right-hander has been a rock for the Royals, saving 35 of 37 opportunities. Batters are hitting just .198 against him.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Escobar went 2-for-3 with two hits and two RBI on Monday in a 3-2 win over the A's.
Impact: Escobar was the hero with a go-ahead single in the seventh inning of a victory that put the Royals atop the AL Central. The 27-year-old is slashing .280/.316/.373 with two home runs and 24 stolen bases in 410 at-bats.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Aoki is out of the lineup Monday against the Athletics.
Impact: Aoki, who last took a seat on July 31, has been crisp at the plate in the interim. In 31 at-bats, he's racked up a .323 average, one homer, one double, eight RBI, seven runs, four stolen bases, and six free passes versus two strikeouts. In his stead, Lorenzo Cain will handle right field, while Jarrod Dyson bats leadoff.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ventura allowed two runs on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts over six innings Monday in a win over the A's.
Impact: Ventura tossed his fourth straight quality start during a no decision on the way to Kansas City taking over first place in the AL Central. The hard-throwing righty walked four batters but was around the plate all night, barely missing on a few offerings. He owns a 3.45 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 115:44 K:BB over 133 innings. Ventura will take the hill Saturday in Minnesota.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | STATS
News: The Royals have acquired Willingham from the Twins for minor league pitcher Jason Adam in an attempt to bolster their offense for the stretch run.
Impact: Willingham was hitting just .210 for the Twins this season, but his 12 homers in limited at-bats were appealing for a Royals club that has struggled to find power.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | STATS
News: Dyson had three hits with a double in Sunday's 7-4 win over San Francisco.
Impact: Dyson is 4 for 4 in his last two games for the red-hot Royals.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hosmer hopes to be able to begin swinging after undergoing an X-ray on his injured right hand Thursday, the Kansas City Star's Andy McCullough reports.
Impact: The results of the X-rays will determine whether Hosmer can commence hitting. He's hopeful to return within the 3-to-6 week timetable originally announced when the fracture was discovered on July 31, and Thursday's results will go a long way in determining a new timetable. The Royals just traded for Josh Willingham from the Twins, who will presumably slot in at DH for as long as Hosmer is out, with Billy Butler continuing to man first base.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Willingham was traded to the Royals on Monday for minor league pitcher Jason Adam.
Impact: The Royals acquire a right-handed power bat to face lefties off the bench in September and most likely DH as long as Eric Hosmer remains out with a hand injury. Hosmer is expected to miss at least two more weeks, which means Billy Butler and Willingham will each play over that stretch, rightly forcing Raul Ibanez out of the lineup. It's been a rough season for Willingham from a batting average standpoint (.210), but he's getting on base at a .345 clip and has 12 home runs in 68 games with Minnesota, so it's a nice pickup for the Royals. He's set to become a free agent at the end of the 2014 season.
Sun. Aug 10, 2014 | STATS
News: Shields allowed four hits in a complete-game 5-0 win over visiting San Francisco on Saturday.
Impact: Shields has gone 3-2 with a 1.63 ERA over his last seven starts.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gordon went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a walk in a win over San Francisco on Sunday.
Impact: Gordon has been swinging a hot bat, having hit a home run in three of his last four games. Following Sunday's win, he's now slashing .279/.356/.437 with 12 homers and 53 RBI for the season.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Aoki went 2-for-2 with an RBI, two runs scored, two walks and three stolen bases in Sunday's home win over San Francisco.
Impact: Aoki is the first Kansas City player to record three stolen bases in a single game since Gregor Blanco in 2010. The 32-year-old has been an instrumental part of the Royals' seven-game winning streak, collecting seven hits, seven RBI and six runs scored in that span.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Duffy was solid once again in Sunday's win over San Francisco, allowing three hits and four runs (with four strikeouts and three walks) in 6.2 innings.
Impact: Duffy looked sharp until the seventh inning, when he allowed two walks and then a two-run double to Andrew Susac. Reliever Jason Frasor came on soon after and allowed Susac to score. Despite the shaky inning, Duffy still earned the winning decision, and he's now surrendered a mere seven earned runs over 31 innings since the All-Star break. He'll next take the mound on Friday in Minnesota.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cain is not in the lineup Sunday against the Giants, Josh Vernier of FOX Sports Kansas City reports.
Impact: Cain will take a seat Sunday after seven straight starts, collecting nine hits in that span. Jarrod Dyson will provide him with a breather and will bat ninth for the Royals.
Sat. Aug 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gordon went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored in a win over the Giants on Saturday night.
Impact: The blast was Gordon's 11th of the season and second in the last three games. He continues to provide excellent value for the Royals with his defense in left field, but he seems to have leveled off with a .276/.352/.428 line, and his days of carrying an OPS north of .800 may be over.
Sat. Aug 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Shields struck out five and walked one while tossing a four-hit shutout against the Giants on Saturday night.
Impact: While Shields only recorded four swinging-strikes in the outing, he consistently stayed ahead in the count (21-for-31 first-pitch strikes, 72 of his 109 pitches were strikes) and avoided costly mistakes. He'll match up against the A's on Thursday in his next scheduled start.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Butler was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Kansas City's win over the Giants on Friday night.
Impact: Maybe he likes August - when the calendar turned, he turned it on. Or maybe he likes playing first base - with Eric Hosmer back on the disabled list, he's been doing some of that too. Whatever the case may be, following a lackluster four months Butler has become energized the past week or so, and is now hitting .279 with seven home runs and 47 RBI.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Holland notched a save, his 33rd of the year, by hurling a clean ninth inning and recording a pair of strikeouts in the Royals' 4-2 win over San Francisco on Friday night.
Impact: He needed just 11 pitches (eight strikes) to finish off the Giants. He's now converted 33 of 35 chances and carries a nifty 1.81 ERA, so it would be difficult to name a more reliable end gamer.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Vargas allowed two runs on nine hits, didn't walk a batter, and struck out five over five innings, but came away with a no-decision as the Royals topped San Francisco, 4-2 on Friday night.
Impact: Making just his second start since returning to the rotation following an appendectomy, it was a bend-but-don't-break night for the southpaw. He needed 101 pitches (just 69 for strikes) to record 15 outs so there may still be a little residual rust from his month-long stay on the disabled list. He'll try to get on track in his next start at home against the tough Oakland A's.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | STATS
News: Guthrie went the distance Thursday, allowing two runs while scattering seven hits in a 6-2 win at Arizona.
Impact: The right-hander has posted a 3.05 ERA while winning his last three starts.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Willingham is not in Friday's lineup, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Impact: New addition Jordan Schafer will get the start in left field, as the Twins may try to see what they have with the young outfielders rostered around Willingham. This is his second day off in the last three games.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hosmer (hand) will be held out of baseball activities for at least two weeks, the Associated Press reports.
Impact: The dead period with regards to baseball activities makes sense, as the Royals previously indicated that Hosmer will have another set of X-rays in approximately two weeks to determine the extent of his healing.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Infante went 1-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored against the D-backs on Thursday night.
Impact: Since the All-Star break, Infante has started every game for the Royals while locking into the No. 2 spot in the batting order. With that placement in the lineup, he should provide a few extra runs scored barring a change of heart from manager Ned Yost. Infante is hitting just .263/.303/.360 in the first season of a four-year, $28.25 million pact with the Royals.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Guthrie struck out four and gave up two runs on seven hits in a complete game effort against the D-Backs on Thursday night.
Impact: The win improved Guthrie's record to 8-9 on the season, as he took advantage of an Arizona lineup that has been thinned out by the non-waiver trade deadline and the loss of Paul Goldschmidt to a broken hand last weekend. Guthrie will have two starts next week, first facing the A's at home Tuesday before a road start at Minnesota on Sunday (August 17).
