Mon. Sep 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Soler (personal) will return to the lineup Monday, batting fourth against the Reds.
Impact: He missed the weekend series to attend the birth of his child, but should be readily available for fantasy owners, hitting in the middle of the Cubs' order down the stretch.
Mon. Sep 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) will return to the lineup Monday, batting third against the Reds.
Impact: The Cubs' starting first baseman has been sidelined with the back injury since August 26, and will return for owners at a perfect time for those in weekly leagues. It has truly been a breakout season for Rizzo, and he'll be among the first handful of first basemen drafted in fantasy leagues in 2015.
Mon. Sep 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Jackson (back) will pitch a simulated game before returning the Cubs in the next two weeks, Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports.
Impact: Cubs manager Rick Renteria said that the team might find a spot start or two for Jackson down the stretch, which puts a simulated game on tap in the coming days to determine if his lat strain has healed enough for him to pitch.
Sun. Sep 14, 2014 | STATS
News: Baez hit his ninth home run in Saturday's 6-4 win at Pittsburgh.
Impact: Although Baez is hitting .174 in his rookie season, he has provided some pop and has driven in 18 runs.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat.
Impact: Rizzo appears on the verge of a return after taking part in baseball activities Friday, but he will be held out Sunday to get another day of rest. Rizzo could be back in the lineup as soon as Monday.
Sep 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Castillo is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat.
Impact: Castillo will get a day off after starting seven straight games and 10 of the last 11. John Baker will get the start behind the plate in Castillo's place.
Sat. Sep 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) remains out of the lineup Saturday against the Pirates.
Impact: Rizzo took on-field batting practice and ran the bases prior to Friday's game, typically the final hurdles a player must clear before returning to action. The hope seems to be that he'll be back in the lineup for Monday's series opener against Cincinnati.
Sat. Sep 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Coghlan is not in the lineup Saturday against the Pirates.
Impact: Manager Rick Renteria has all but rid his lineup of lefty-only bats to counter Pirates starter Jeff Locke, with the lone exception being Luis Valbuena at third base. Coghlan has posted a .708 OPS so far in the second half but should continue leading off most days for the Cubs. Those duties will fall to Arismendy Alcantara on Saturday.
Fri. Sep 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Alcantara went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's loss to the Pirates.
Impact: After struggling through a seven-game skid that saw him go just 3-for-29 with a dozen strikeouts, Alcantara showed some life at the plate Friday night. The 22-year-old native of Cuba has had some impressive spurts during his rookie campaign, but is not likely to display much consistency until he can cut down on the whiffs.
Fri. Sep 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Wada labored through 4.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on nine hits and two walks while recording a couple of strikeouts in Friday's 7-3 loss to the Pirates.
Impact: This effort was certainly a bit discouraging, as Wada came in sporting an impressive 2.54 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 39:10 K:BB ratio over his previous 46 innings. The 33-year-old native of Japan has mostly been a steady presence in the Cubs' rotation here in the second half of 2014 and will look to get back on track Thursday versus the Dodgers.
Fri. Sep 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) took batting practice and ran the bases before Friday's game, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: Rizzo appears to be getting closer and closer to a return to the field, but the indication is still that Monday will be his return date. Either way, the Cubs will enjoy a boost to the middle of their lineup when he finally returns.
Fri. Sep 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Wada (calf) has been confirmed as Friday's starter against the Pirates.
Impact: Wada's last start was cut short after 3.1 innings due to a calf cramp, but there was never any indication that he was in danger of missing his next turn. The lefty had turned in quality starts in four of his last five outings prior to the abbreviated start last week.
Fri. Sep 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Soler will miss the Cubs' weekend series with the Pirates to attend the birth of his child, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Impact: Soler will travel to Miami and miss all three games of the weekend set. He's expected to return to the lineup Monday when the Cubs host Cincinnati.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) took batting practice on the field prior to Wednesday's game, the Associated Press reports.
Impact: He's increasing his activity this week, having taken a lighter BP session prior to Tuesday's game. Rizzo could return in the coming days, but the Cubs have no incentive to push him back into the lineup if he's still feeling any pain in his back.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Valbuena went 2-for-4 in the Cubs' loss to Toronto on Wednesday.
Impact: With Anthony Rizzo (back) on the shelf, Valbuena has been positioned in the heart of the order for the Cubs in recent weeks. He's now hitting .247/.328/.445 on the year, but it's likely that he's auditioning for a role elsewhere in 2015, as the Cubs have a slew of younger options pounding on the door for roster spots.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Vizcaino gave up two runs in an inning against Toronto on Wednesday.
Impact: Vizcaino has given up four hits and three runs in his first two appearances with the Cubs this season. He could compete for a shot at closing for the Cubs next spring, but he'll have to show he can get big-league hitters out first.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Soler hit a solo home run to account for all the Cubs' offense in an 11-1 loss to Toronto on Wednesday.
Impact: After hitting three home runs in his first three games with the Cubs, Soler went more than 30 at-bats before his fourth. Still, with a .356/.367/.733 slash line in 45 at-bats at the big-league level, the future looks very bright.
Thu. Sep 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hendricks gave up four runs on six hits and two walks in 5.2 innings against the Blue Jays on Wednesday, falling to 6-2 in the process.
Impact: Though Hendricks struck out five in the loss, it's possible he's hit a wall. Though he only gave up two runs in his last start, he had zero strikeouts and gave up nine hits. It's still been a fantastic rookie season for Hendricks, who has a 2.38 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 11 starts for the Cubs.
Wed. Sep 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) remains out of the lineup Wednesday.
Impact: He took grounders and light batting practice before Tuesday's game, but is still likely a few days away from returning to the Cubs' lineup. Mike Olt will start at first base.
Tue. Sep 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Arrieta pitched well in a no-decision Tuesday against the Jays, giving up two earned runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out five over 6.1 innings.
Impact: Arrieta has now given up two earned runs or less in seven of his last nine starts, a span that has seen his BB:K on the season improve to a solid 39:144 to go with a 2.82 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. The 28-year-old righty draws the Reds for his next start Tuesday.
Tue. Sep 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) fielded grounders and took light batting practice prior to Tuesday's game, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Impact: After taking part in on-field activities for a second straight day, Rizzo said that he hopes to return to the lineup before the end of this weekend's series in Pittsburgh. Manager Rick Renteria was predictably non-committal, but did say that Rizzo didn't seem to have any residual effects from his first on-field batting practice Monday. While the Cubs have nothing to gain by rushing him back, it sounds like Rizzo will be back in action no later than early next week.
Mon. Sep 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) remains out of the lineup Monday.
Impact: Mike Olt will get the start at first, which is no surprise, as Rizzo remains out indefinitely. The Cubs said that Rizzo would be on the DL right now if rosters hadn't expanded this month, so it's conceivable he could miss another week or more with the back injury.
Mon. Sep 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Turner lost Monday against the Blue Jays as he pitched six innings and allowed five runs (four earned), seven hits and one walk to go along with two strikeouts.
Impact: Turner allowed only one run in 6.1 innings in his last start, but he followed that up with a poor performance Monday. His stuff isn't overpowering, so he is likely to continue to have trouble stringing together impressive outings.
Mon. Sep 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) took pain-free batting practice Monday and is optimistic he'll be able to return for the Cubs' weekend series with the Pirates, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Impact: Rizzo hasn't played since Aug. 26, sitting out each of the club's last 12 games. There was some worry that he might be at risk of missing the rest of the season after the Cubs ruled him out indefinitely early last week, so the reported progress is somewhat reassuring for those fantasy owners who continued to hang onto him. The first baseman will likely still have to go through a more strenuous circuit of exercises before he's given clearance to return, leaving Mike Olt to assume the bulk of the duties at the position until Rizzo is ready to go.
Mon. Sep 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Olt will draw his third straight start at first base Monday against the Blue Jays, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: Olt earned another starting nod by supplying a career-high three hits along with a walk in Sunday's series finale against the Pirates. With Anthony Rizzo (back) still out indefinitely, Olt looks on track to assume regular duty at first base over Chris Valaika so long as he can keep his strikeouts at bay. He's done well to show a renewed approach to his point since rejoining the big-league roster, but there remains plenty of doubt that he'll ever cash in on the top prospect status he once enjoyed while coming up through the Rangers organization just a few years ago.
Sep 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Wood allowed seven runs on nine hits and a walk in just 1.2 innings of work in the Cubs' 14-4 loss to the Pirates on Sunday.
Impact: Wood also allowed a season-high three home runs in the contest. He's now lost three of five starts, watching his ERA balloon to 5.15 in the process.
Sep 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Valaika is out of the lineup Sunday against the Pirates.
Impact: Valaika has started 11 straight games for the Cubs, but will give way to Mike Olt at first base Sunday, while Luis Valbuena mans the hot corner. The 29-year-old Valaika is riding a four-game hitting streak and owns a .670 OPS over 80 at-bats this season.
Sep 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Soler is out of the lineup Sunday against the Pirates.
Impact: Soler has been the primary right fielder for the Cubs since he was called up, but he'll give way to Ryan Kalish on Sunday afternoon. The explosive rookie is batting .382/.405/.794 with three home runs in nine big-league games and continues to be a staple in the teams' future plans. Chalk up Sunday's absence to a regular day of rest.
Sep 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Villanueva continued his strong second half with 1.2 innings in Friday's game that was not officially completed until Saturday.
Impact: Though his year-to-date numbers do not reflect it, Villanueva has pitched well since the break, compiling a 1.57 ERA and 24:4 K:BB ratio in 23 innings. He was a disaster as a starter this year (10.53 ERA in five starts), but in 35 appearances as a reliever, he has a 2.65 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He does not look like a big-league starter anymore, though he keeps getting opportunities.
Sep 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Fujikawa struck out the only two batters he faced in Saturday's nightcap after retiring the only batter he faced in Saturday's continuation of Friday's suspended game.
Impact: Fujikawa has only thrown 9.1 innings for the Cubs this year, but he's struck out 12 and walked just three. He could still be the Cubs' closer next year, though his chances of winning that job are much lower than they once were.
Sat. Sep 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Doubront gave up two runs on five hits over five innings in a losing effort Saturday against the Pirates.
Impact: The Cubs removed Doubront after 81 pitches, giving Dan Straily a couple of innings in middle relief in the process. The current setup of the Cubs' rotation will put Doubront on the mound again Friday in Pittsburgh in a rematch against the Pirates.
Sat. Sep 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Valbuena is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Pirates.
Impact: Valbuena will get the night off with the Cubs facing Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano. Chris Valaika will get the start at third base in Valbuena's place.
Sat. Sep 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Castillo (back) is in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Pirates.
Impact: Castillo was scratched from Friday's lineup with the setback but will be able to take the field on Saturday night. He'll bat cleanup against Pirates starter Francisco Liriano.
Sat. Sep 6, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Castillo (back) is expected to play in Saturday's regularly scheduled game against Pittsburgh, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.
Impact: Scratched from the lineup for the series opener due to lower-back tightness, Castillo will remain on the bench when the Cubs and Pirates resume Friday's suspended game on Saturday afternoon, but it sounds like he'll be in there to face lefty Francisco Liriano in the second game. Castillo is 3-for-10 with a homer in his career against Liriano.
Fri. Sep 5, 2014 | STATS
News: Wada has left the Chicago Cubs' game against Pittsburgh due to mild cramping in his left calf.
Impact: Wada was on the mound with one out in the fourth when manager Rick Renteria, pitching coach Chris Bosio and a trainer came out to check on him.
Fri. Sep 5, 2014 | STATS
News: Castillo has been scratched due to tightness in his lower back.
Impact: The team says Castillo is day to day.
Fri. Sep 5, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Wada left Friday's game midway through the fourth inning with an apparent injury, the Daily Herald's Bruce Miles reports.
Impact: The training staff went out to the mound and after examining Wada, he was removed. He gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in 3.1 innings. His velocity had dipped a bit, but there's no official word on the injury yet.
Fri. Sep 5, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Castillo has been scratched from Friday's lineup with lower-back tightness and is day-to-day.
Impact: The Cubs announced this move shortly before first pitch, and John Baker will get the last-minute start behind the dish.
Fri. Sep 5, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Olt (hamstring) rejoined the Cubs on Friday and will likely get the start Saturday against lefty Francisco Liriano, ESPN Chicago's Jesse Rogers reports.
Impact: Olt had been rehabbing with Low-A Kane County, but he is healthy enough to be back with the big-league club, and could be available off the bench in Friday's game. Olt has hit six home runs in just 64 at-bats against lefties this season, but that comes with a dismal .156 batting average, so there is some give-and-take that comes with owning Olt in fantasy.
Thu. Sep 4, 2014 | STATS
News: Hendricks continued to impress Wednesday, allowing two runs over 5 2-3 innings in a 6-2 win over Milwaukee.
Impact: The rookie has gone 6-1 with a 1.60 ERA in his last nine starts.
Wed. Sep 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Valaika went 2-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer against the Brewers on Wednesday.
Impact: Valaika is slashing .208/.266/.347 since being called up from Triple-A Iowa on August 2. The 29-year-old utility player has been starting at first base recently, but has been working out at catcher on the side to increase his versatility.
Wed. Sep 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Baez was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk Wednesday in a 6-2 victory over the Brewers.
Impact: The hit breaks a three-game hitless streak for Baez, who is now hitting just .179 on the year. The rookie is struggling to make consistent contact after slugging three home runs in his first three games. Baez will have the opportunity to make adjustments as the everyday starter at shortstop now that Starlin Castro is lost for the rest of the season with a high-ankle sprain.
Wed. Sep 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Soler went 1-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored from the cleanup spot Wednesday against the Brewers.
Impact: Soler now has 26 total bases in as many at-bats during is first week in the big leagues. The 22-year-old is slashing a silly .462/.500/1.000 with three home runs, 10 RBI and has hit safely in all seven games.
Wed. Sep 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hendricks (6-1) allowed two runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings Wednesday, completing a sweep of the Brewers.
Impact: Hendricks didn't walk or strikeout a batter in the contest and avoided any major damage. The 24-year-old was named National League Rookie of the Month in August, after going 4-0 in six starts with a 1.69 ERA, and he kept the momentum going into September. Hendricks won't pitch again until next Wednesday in Toronto as the Cubs go to a six-man rotation.
Wed. Sep 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Sweeney (hamstring) has been moved to the 60-day DL and is done for the season, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: He won't play again this season, as the Cubs needed to clear a 40-man spot for Ryan Kalish.
Wed. Sep 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Kalish has had his contract purchased by the Cubs and will join the team down the stretch, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: He has hit just .252/.323/.406 with Triple-A Iowa and doesn't offer much fantasy upside. It's also unlikely that the Cubs would give him many looks, considering all the other players on the roster that will need to be evaluated over the final month.
Wed. Sep 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Olt (hamstring) is on track to be called up to Chicago on Friday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN 1000 reports.
Impact: Olt is set to play a couple rehab games with Low-A Kane County the next couple days, and if all goes well, he will join the big club Friday. Olt may not see regular starts in September, but the Cubs will likely work him into the lineup at least a couple times per week to make sure he gets at-bats.
Wed. Sep 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Sweeney (hamstring) is likely done for the season, Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports.
Impact: Sweeney began a rehab assignment recently, but it appears his hamstring is not healthy enough to handle a full workload, and he will likely be shut down for the season. Sweeney will be back with the Cubs next season after signing a two-year deal with the club last October.
Wed. Sep 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Castro was diagnosed Wednesday with a high-ankle sprain and is expected to miss the rest of the season, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Impact: Because the recovery process for Castro's injury typically requires a four-week timetable, the Cubs aren't counting on having their star shortstop back in the fold the rest of the way. While the team won't shut Castro down completely after he expressed a desire to attempt to beat his prognosis, fantasy owners in single-season leagues probably need not hold their breath on a comeback at this point. With Castro effectively out of the picture, Javier Baez is likely to slide over from second base to his more natural position at shortstop, while Logan Watkins figures to assume regular duties at the keystone in September.
Wed. Sep 3, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Castro (ankle) is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Brewers.
Impact: While Castro received some good news, namely that the left ankle issue that forced him out of Tuesday's game was a sprain rather than a fracture, there's a good possibility he'll still have to miss multiple days due the injury. The Cubs are still awaiting an MRI that was expected to reveal the severity of the sprain, and once those results are announced, a better estimate of Castro's recovery timetable should become available.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ruggiano (ankle) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Tuesday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: Ruggiano's move to the 60-day DL comes as no surprise. He won't play again this season and the move opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for the plethora of call-ups the Cubs announced Tueday.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) is out of the lineup again Tuesday.
Impact: Rizzo has been out of the lineup much longer than expected, and will miss his eighth straight game Tuesday. He also reportedly could undergo a precautionary MRI on his back to determine if there is a more severe ailment causing his back pain. With expanded September rosters, Rizzo will not require a DL stint, but it's unclear at this point when he will be able to return to the lineup.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | STATS
News: Castro is expected to miss the remainder of the Chicago Cubs' season with an ankle injury.
Impact: Castro left Tuesday night's 7-1 win over Milwaukee after getting hurt on a first-inning slide into home plate. Tests showed he sustained a high ankle sprain. Castro, a three-time All-Star, was holding out hope that he could beat the four-week prognosis to return. But general manager Jed Hoyer said Wednesday that Castro had played his final game this season. Cubs rookie Javier Baez, a natural shortstop, will shift over from second base.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Arrieta stymied the Brewers over six innings Tuesday, giving up one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts to improve to 8-5.
Impact: It was a great bounce back performance from the Cubs' top starter after he gave up six earned runs in his last outing. Arrieta has now given up three or fewer earned runs in 19 of his 22 starts this season, going six-plus innings in 15 of those. He'll look to continue his fantastic season Tuesday in Toronto.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Alcantara went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer Tuesday against Milwaukee.
Impact: It was Alcantara's fifth home run in his last 10 games, and after a three-week slump (.160/.200/.235) to start the month of August, the exciting, young center fielder is clearly red hot.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Castro left Tuesday's game with a sprained left ankle, and while he's still being evaluated, a break/fracture has been ruled out, ESPN Chicago's Jesse Rogers reports.
Impact: He will still need to undergo an MRI, but the worst has already been ruled out after he slid awkwardly at home plate in the first inning of Tuesday's game. Javier Baez and Arismendy Alcantara are both more than capable of playing shortstop in the short term.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Castro left Tuesday's game with an apparent leg injury after sliding awkwardly at home plate in the bottom of the first inning, the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales reports.
Impact: The play didn't look good, and it was an unnecessary injury as there wasn't a play at the plate. Given the Cubs' lack of incentive to win the game, there wasn't any reason to leave him in, especially with a three-run lead early against Milwaukee. Javier Baez moved to shortstop and Logan Watkins came in to play second base.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) is out indefinitely and would be on the disabled list if the rosters didn't expand at the start of September, Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports.
Impact: Rizzo left last Tuesday's game with lower back tightness, and his return date has been pushed back multiple times since. The most recent puts him out for an undetermined amount of time, leaving his availability for the remainder of the season in doubt. Chris Valaika has taken on the duties at first base in his absence, and should continue to do so until he returns.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lopez was called up from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: Lopez will give the Cubs a third catching option for September with the expanded rosters. While he won't see playing time on a consistent basis, he should get a couple spot starts behind the plate and will likely serve as a pinch hitter on multiple occasions.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Jokisch was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: Jokisch posted a 3.58 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 158.1 innings with Triple-A Iowa this season. He will join the Cubs bullpen in September, where he will get an opportunity to showcase his stuff in preparation for next season.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lake was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Monday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: Lake will provide the Cubs with depth in the outfield, a position short two bodies in Ryan Sweeney and Justin Ruggiano due to injury. The team has three solid starters, but Lake will provide them with extra depth and likely will see spot starts in center and left field.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Vizcaino was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: Finally healthy again, Vizcaino started the season in High-A but worked his way up to Double-A and then Triple-A before getting the call to the majors Tuesday. He last pitched in the majors with the Braves in 2011, posting a 4.67 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 17 games, and will look for a better showing in September, which could serve as an audition for next season.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Straily was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: Straily has served almost exclusively as a starting pitcher regardless of his level. However, the Cubs already list six pitchers in the rotation, so it's unclear how the team plans to use him, but long relief would be the most likely scenario.
Tue. Sep 2, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Schlitter was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: Schlitter will rejoin the Cubs a week after being reinstated from the disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Iowa. He posted a respectable 3.47 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 53 games with the Cubs and will get another opportunity to pitch out of the bullpen in September.
Mon. Sep 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) could undergo a precautionary MRI on Tuesday, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Impact: The Cubs certainly didn't expect Rizzo to miss seven games when he first experienced back soreness last week, raising concern that a more severe ailment may be in play. If the issue doesn't clear up enough for Rizzo to return to the lineup Tuesday against the Brewers, it would make sense for the Cubs to take a closer look at his condition just to be on the safe side. Fortunately, the recently-expanded roster will allow the Cubs to give Rizzo as much time off as he needs to recover, without having to worry about a lack of depth at the position.
Mon. Sep 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Castillo went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and one run scored Monday against the Brewers.
Impact: Castillo now has 11 home runs this season, but isn't providing much else offensively as he is only hitting .231 with 37 RBI. He hit .274 last season, so he has regressed considerably in that department this season.
Mon. Sep 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rondon earned his 23rd save of the season Monday against the Brewers, as he allowed one hit and recorded two strikeouts in his scoreless inning.
Impact: Rondon hasn't allowed a run in his last 10 appearances and although he plays for a sub-.500 team and didn't start the season as the team's closer, he looks likely to finish somewhere around 25 or 30 saves this season. He has recorded 57 strikeouts in 53.1 innings as well, making him a valuable fantasy option.
Mon. Sep 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Turner (5-8) won Monday against the Brewers, tossing 6.1 innings and allowed one run, five hits and one walk to go along with seven strikeouts.
Impact: Turner had been pitching out of the bullpen of late for the Cubs, but stepped in for the injured Edwin Jackson on Monday and posted an impressive outing. With Jackson not expected back anytime soon, Turner may have earned himself at least one more start.
Mon. Sep 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rizzo (back) remains out of the lineup Monday against the Brewers.
Impact: Rizzo targeted Monday as the day for his return, but his back must not be cooperating. He will instead sit again and yield the start to Chris Valaika at first base, who will bat eighth for the Cubs.
Mon. Sep 1, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Cubs hope Rizzo (back) can return to the lineup Monday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Impact: They also hoped he could return to the lineup Friday...and Saturday...and Sunday. He's been out of action since he left Tuesday's game with a tight lower back.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | STATS
News: Soler homered in his first major league at-bat and finished 2 for 4 in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to Cincinnati.
Impact: Soler is one of the Cubs' top prospects, and fantasy owners would be wise to keep an eye on his progress for a late-season push.
Wed. Aug 27, 2014 | STATS
News: Soler was called up from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday.
