News: Wood turned in a brilliant performance in Sunday's victory over the Marlins, allowing just five hits while racking up 12 strikeouts across eight scoreless frames.
Impact: Wood wrapped up a month of phenomenal work on the mound with possibly the best performance of his young career. Over six starts in August, the 23-year-old southpaw put together an outstanding 1.96 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 8.7 K/9 across 41.1 innings. Wood is scheduled to face the Marlins once again next weekend.
Sun. Aug 31, 2014 | STATS
News: Heyward continued his recent tear, going 3 for 4 in a 4-0 loss to Miami on Saturday.
Impact: Heyward is hitting .383 with two homers and nine RBIs in his last 11 games.
Aug 31, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Johnson is out of the lineup Sunday against the Marlins.
Impact: Johnson will take a three-game hitting streak back to the bench Sunday. Phil Gosselin will get the call in his place and bat second for the Braves.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Upton was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Atlanta's win over the Marlins on Friday night.
Impact: He launched a two-run home run, his 26th, and added a run-scoring single to lead the Braves to the win. He has been a major force as the Braves try to chase down the division-leading Nationals, and has now established a career-high with 91 RBI.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Kimbrel tossed a scoreless ninth inning to protect a 5-2 win and log his 40th save against Miami on Friday night.
Impact: The 40 saves gives him four consecutive seasons with 40 or or more saves. He hasn't been quite as dominant this season, but a 1.70 ERA isn't exactly a poor showing, and he remains one of the premier closers in the game.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Santana turned in a solid performance Friday night, allowing one run on five hits while walking four and striking out seven over seven innings against the Marlins, but was left with a no-decision.
Impact: He struggled with his command early, walking the bases loaded in the first inning, but settled down to log another quality start. He'll carry a nice 3.53 into his next start at home against Philadelphia.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | STATS
News: Minor allowed one run and four hits over seven innings in Thursday's 6-1 win over the Mets at Citi Field.
Impact: Minor appears to have overcome his struggles earlier in the season. He's gone 2-0 with a 1.66 ERA in his last three starts.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | STATS
News: Bonifacio went 4 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs in a 6-1 win at Citi Field on Thursday.
Impact: Bonifacio has gone 8 for 14 over his last five games.
Fri. Aug 29, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Venters will undergo a third Tommy John surgery, Kevin McAplin of the Braves Radio Network reports.
Impact: Venters was a back-end guy in the Braves' bullpen just a couple years ago, but has had terrible luck with his arm. He has decided to give his career another crack, however, and will receive a Tommy John surgery from the renowned doctor James Andrews.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Upton is out of the lineup Thursday against the Mets.
Impact: As was the case late last season, it appears manager Fredi Gonzalez's patience is wearing thin with Upton and his lack of on-base skills. Upton will sit out for the third time in six games, making way for Emilio Bonifacio to handle center field.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gattis is out of the lineup Thursday against the Mets.
Impact: With Gattis having started each of the last four games, manager Fredi Gonzalez decided he was overdue for a rest. Gerald Laird will catch Mike Minor.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Bonifacio went 4-for-5 with a steal and two RBI and in Thursday's 6-1 win over the Mets.
Impact: Bonifacio, who batted second, returned to the lineup after sitting Wednesday. His performance Thursday was easily his best as a Brave, and could propel him into the starting lineup more often, at least in the short term.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Minor tossed seven strong innings against the Mets on Thursday to earn his sixth win of the season. He gave up just one run and four hits while striking out five batters.
Impact: Minor took a shutout into the eighth inning, but was pulled after allowing a double and single to start the frame. It's been a rough season for Minor, but he's turned things around lately, with four straight quality starts and 24 strikeouts during that period (28.1 innings). The long ball has been an issue for Minor all year, but he's given up just two in his last four starts. He's got a favorable matchup in his next start, taking on Philadelphia at home.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Venters has a full UCL tear in his left elbow according to manager Fredi Gonzalez.
Impact: A UCL tear for Venters was confirmed Wednesday, but the severity of the tear had not been disclosed prior to Thursday evening. A full tear is clearly bad news, as Venters will miss a calendar year at the minimum, but considering that it would be his third Tommy John surgery, extended rehab seems like a likely possibility. Whether he chooses rehab or retirement remains to be seen.
Thu. Aug 28, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Venters (elbow) was diagnosed with another tear of his UCL and has been ruled out for a return this season, MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports.
Impact: It's not known if the tear is a partial or full one, but either way, Tommy John surgery would likely be necessary for Venters. The left-hander was in the process in recovering from his second Tommy John operation before suffering this latest setback, and it would be difficult to blame him if he chose to retire rather than set forth on yet another arduous rehab process. It's a sad development for 29-year-old Venters, who was one of the game's top middle relievers from 2010 to 2012.
Wed. Aug 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Johnson is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Mets.
Impact: Johnson had started 24 straight games for the Braves, so manager Fredi Gonzalez will grant him a day off in attempt to keep his batteries charged for the season's final month. Phil Gosselin will fill in for him at third base.
Wed. Aug 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Kimbrel tossed a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 39th save of the season.
Impact: The save was his first since Friday, as he did not pitch in any of the Braves' last three games prior to Wednesday. He'll look to record No. 40 next time out, which will mark his fourth consecutive season with at least 40 saves.
Wed. Aug 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Teheran struck out four and walked two while giving up one run on three hits over 6.1 innings in a winning effort against the Mets on Wednesday.
Impact: The victory Wednesday upped Teheran's season total to 13, and he managed to avoid significant damage despite falling behind to 15 of the 24 batters he faced. Teheran is lined up for two starts next week, first against the Phillies on Monday before a road start in Miami on September 7.
Wed. Aug 27, 2014 | STATS
News: Upton went 3 for 3 with an RBI in Tuesday's loss to the New York Mets.
Impact: Upton had been 0 for 9 in his previous two games, but he's batting .379 with 21 RBIs in his last 16 games.
Wed. Aug 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Bethancourt, 22, is batting .273/.296/.404 with eight home runs, 45 RBI and five steals through 86 games for Triple-A Gwinnett.
Impact: Bethancourt played in 13 games for the big club earlier this season, hitting .240 with three RBI. He could be a September callup when rosters expand.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Upton is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Mets.
Impact: Upton is 7-for-59 in August with two home runs and just four RBI. He will yield the start Tuesday to Emilio Bonifacio, who will man center field and bat second for the Braves.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Upton went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's loss to the Mets.
Impact: Upton's hot streak looked like it could be coming to an end after he went 0-for-9 over the final two games of the weekend series with the Reds, but Tuesday's performance would seem to suggest otherwise. The 27-year-old is now just one RBI away from matching his career high, and personal bests in home runs and batting average are also within reach.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Wood (9-10) took the loss Tuesday against the Mets, giving up three runs over seven innings while striking out six batters.
Impact: Illustrating just how excellent Wood has been lately, the three earned runs were the most he's allowed since July 25, spanning five starts. He probably deserved a better fate Tuesday, but the two-run homer he served up to Juan Lagares proved to be the difference. Wood's rise to prominence in the face of Mike Minor's struggles has been a major reason the Braves have managed to stay on the periphery of the wild card race.
Tue. Aug 26, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Venters has been shut down again to renewed elbow soreness, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Impact: The left-hander recently tried to ramp up this throwing program but the decision to do so was ill-fated, as he's now scheduled for another visit to Dr. James Andrews. Venters' recovery from May 2013 Tommy John surgery -- his second career Tommy John surgery -- has been interrupted by several setbacks and if a third such procedure is needed, it may very well jeopardize the 29-year-old's career.
Mon. Aug 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gosselin picked up a spot start at shortstop Sunday and went 2-for-4 with a walk in the Braves' loss to the Reds.
Impact: Gosselin is hitting for average (.304 in 46 at-bats) but very little power (two extra-base hits) since getting called up. Tommy La Stella, who has a similar high-average, low-power skill set, has been getting more of the starts at second base, but Gosselin also is getting spot starts for Andrelton Simmons here-and-there.
Mon. Aug 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gattis hit his 20th homer Sunday while going 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch against the Reds.
Impact: Gattis tied Devin Mesoraco among full-time catchers for the most homers at the position this season (Carlos Santana has 21 homers, but he's only caught 11 times this season). Given the attrition at the position, Gattis could be a top-five catcher next year.
Aug 24, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Harang gave up four runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.1 innings to get the loss Sunday against the Reds. He struck out five.
Impact: Harang had a big mental mistake in the Reds' three-run fourth inning, failing to get over to first base on Jay Bruce's infield single, a mistake that cost him at least two of the three runs. His next start will come at home Saturday against the Marlins, with him getting an extra day of rest due to Monday's travel day.
Aug 24, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Simmons is out of the lineup Sunday against the Reds.
Impact: Simmons went 1-for-4 Saturday night with a double and two strikeouts and will take a three-game hitting streak with him to the bench. Phil Gosselin will play shortstop in his place and bat second for the Braves.
Sat. Aug 23, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Heyward is not in the lineup Saturday in Cincinnati.
Impact: While Heyward hasn't hit for much power this season, advanced metrics rank him as one of the best outfielders in baseball, so he's rarely out of the lineup. Emilio Bonifacio will get the rare start in right field Saturday.
Sat. Aug 23, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Santana pitched seven innings Saturday, allowing one earned run and four hits while striking out seven in a loss to the Reds.
Impact: Santana pitched a quality game but received no run support Saturday. Prior to Saturday's loss, he'd won eight of his previous 10 starts as part of an excellent two-month stretch. For the season, he has a 3.60 ERA and 148:48 K:BB.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Kimbrel struck out a pair while finishing off Friday's win against the Reds to earn his 38th save of the season.
Impact: After going four games without making an appearance, Kimbrel recorded the final three outs with 18 pitches Friday night. Well rested, he should be available as needed if another save situation arises Saturday.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hale earned his fourth win of the season Friday night, tossing a scoreless 11th inning against the Reds.
Impact: He allowed a pair of baserunners by issuing a walk and surrendering a hit, but the scoreless frame dropped Hale's season ERA to 2.97. Unfortunately, his skills don't support that level of success, as he's carrying a 32:31 K:BB with 72 hits allowed in 72.2 innings for the Braves this season. Long term, his chances of returning to the rotation appear very slim.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Minor struck out five and walked four while holding the Reds to one run on one hits over 7.2 innings Friday night.
Impact: The Braves' offense didn't plate the eventual game-winning run until extra innings, preventing Minor from finding his way into the win column. Minor carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning Friday, while the appearance lowered his season ERA to 4.90 (the first time since July 12 he's been below 5.00), and marked his third consecutive quality start.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Upton is out of the lineup Friday against the Reds.
Impact: Just when it seemed like Upton couldn't sink any lower, he has hit .132/.270/.283 in August (17 games), lowering his overall OPS down to .611. Manager Fredi Gonzalez finally caved and removed Upton from the leadoff spot earlier this month, and it seems he'll take it a step further and start sitting him more regularly over the final weeks of the season. Emilio Bonifacio will man center field and bat second in his absence Friday.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gattis is out of the lineup Friday against the Reds.
Impact: Gattis will head to the bench after three straight starts, with Gerald Laird stepping in to catch starter Mike Minor. Although Gattis has struggled to a .226/.258/.387 batting line this month, he has hit two homers in his last six games to bring his total on the season to 19.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: La Stella is out of the lineup Thursday against the Reds.
Impact: La Stella will park it for the fourth time in six games, with manager Fredi Gonzalez seemingly intent on riding the hot hand of Phil Gosselin at the keystone for the time being. Gosselin is 7-for-23 with a homer in his last seven games, whereas La Stella is just 1-for-his-last-18.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Heyward went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a pair of runs in Thursday's 8-0 win at Cincinnati.
Impact: Heyward was recently mired in a 1-for-12 slump, but he's gone 8-for-17 with six runs and six RBI in his last four games. He's been hitting leadoff for over a week now, so it looks like he'll stick there, meaning fewer RBI opportunities, but more chances to score runs.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Simmons hit a solo homer and finished with a pair of RBI in Thursday's win at Cincinnati. It was his seventh home run of the season.
Impact: Simmons left Tuesday's game early with a sore left hip, but appears to be OK moving forward, as he's played in each of the last two days.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Teheran tossed six scoreless innings at Cincinnati on Thursday to earn his 12th win of the season. He scattered four hits and struck out three.
Impact: Teheran was never really challenged, as he allowed just three singles and a double while not walking a batter. The young righty hadn't been as dominant recently as he was earlier in the season, as he had posted a 4.97 ERA over his previous eight starts, a span of 50.2 innings. Even so, he's still a productive starter on a contending team, and should be started with confidence in most cases. He'll toe the rubber against the Mets in his next start.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Upton went 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBI in Thursday's game at Cincinnati.
Impact: Upton also made a sensational leaping catch in left field, so it was an all-around great night for the soon-to-be 27-year-old. He's been on fire in general lately, hitting .444 (12-for-27) with three homers and 14 RBI in the last eight games. Upton needs just five RBI to surpass his previous career best of 88.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Simmons (hip) is back in the lineup Wednesday vs. the Pirates.
Impact: Simmons was pulled out of Tuesday's blowout of the Pirates late in the game after complaining about a sore left hip, but his placement back in Wednesday's lineup suggests his removal was only precautionary. He'll slot into the lineup at shortstop and bat second in the order.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Wood struck out four and walked one while giving up two runs on four hits over seven innings against the Pirates on Wednesday.
Impact: He did not factor in the decision, but the lefty continues to show that he was more than ready to become a regular in the Atlanta rotation this season. He'll face the Mets at Citi Field on Tuesday his next time out, before an August 31 turn against the Marlins.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | STATS
News: Upton homered and drove in five runs in Tuesday's win over Pittsburgh.
Impact: Upton has hit safely in 10 straight. In his last 12, he's got a .480 on-base percentage with five home runs and 16 RBIs.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Upton went off for five RBI as part of a 2-for-4 night that featured his 24th home run of the season Tuesday against the Pirates.
Impact: The younger Upton is some kind of hot lately, as he's now driven in runs in nine of his last 12 games (16 RBI) while going 14-for-40 (.350) with five homers during than span, increasing his average to .287 on the year. At this rate, barring any unforeseen setbacks, he's going to easily tally the eight RBI required to surpass his career high of 88 set in 2011 with the Diamondbacks, and he may just flirt with breaking his home-run record of 31 set in the same year. Enjoy.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Harang (10-7) nearly went the distance Tuesday, tossing 8.1 innings of nine-hit, three-run ball in a win over the Pirates. He did not issue a walk and fanned four.
Impact: This was a nice showing for the 36-year-old, who hadn't recorded a W since July 10 against the Mets (seven starts prior). Harang's pitch count of 114 was one shy of his season high, which he probably would have eclipsed it had Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez not pulled him after three straight hits with one out in the ninth. Regardless, Harang has a 3.50 ERA with a 1.40 WHIP and 119:59 K:BB in 26 starts this season, proving that he's still capable of being a dependable workhorse in the bottom end of a talented Braves rotation.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Simmons exited Tuesday's game with a sore left hip, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Impact: Simmons went 1-for-3 with two runs scored before leaving. The Braves held a large lead at the time of Simmons' departure, so it's possible his removal was only for precautionary purposes.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Upton is out of the lineup Monday.
Impact: The Braves have finally started to sit Upton roughly every fourth day, as his .207/.278/.329 slash line has dipped steadily over the past two weeks. Emilio Bonifacio seems to be a more trusted option in center field for manager Fredi Gonzalez than Jordan Schafer was when he was the backup option.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gattis is out of the lineup Monday.
Impact: The Braves' top catcher will get a standard day off, and it just so happens to also be his 28th birthday Monday. He's slashing .275/.329/.508 on the season, and has been one of the best sources of power at the position for fantasy owners. Gerald Laird will get the nod behind the dish Monday.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Johnson went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored Monday against the Pirates.
Impact: Johnson is currently on a seven-game hitting streak and also has at least one RBI in each of his last three games. He doesn't provide a lot of power as he only has nine home runs this season, but he is hitting a solid .277.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Heyward went 3-for-4 with one home run and two RBI Monday against the Pirates.
Impact: Heyward was 1-for-12 in his last three games entering Monday, so this outburst was a welcome sight for his fantasy owners. He hasn't provided much power this season as he only has two home runs since June 16th and 10 on the season overall.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Santana won Monday against the Pirates as he pitched 5.1 innings and allowed three runs, nine hits and two walks to go along with four strikeouts.
Impact: Santana had a lot of runners on base Monday, but he managed to limit the damage enough and stay in the game long enough to come away with his 13th win of the season. He has a solid 3.71 ERA and 1.28 WHIP for the season and has been a very reliable member of the Braves' rotation.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Upton went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a couple of runs scored in Sunday's 4-3 win over the A's.
Impact: Upton has been on an absolute tear at the plate in recent days, as he is now in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak. Over this stretch, the two-time All-Star has set the pace for the Braves' offense with a .360/.484/.800 slash line across 31 plate appearances. Just for good measure, Upton has also thrown in three homers, nine RBI and seven runs scored during the same span.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Kimbrel struck out two while retiring the side in order en route to his 37th save of the season Sunday night versus the A's.
Impact: After picking up a loss back on August 2, Kimbrel has been dominant over his last half-dozen outings. During this span, the Braves' closer has gone 5-for-5 in his save chances while recording seven strikeouts and allowing just four baserunners across six scoreless frames.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Minor tossed seven strong innings Sunday night, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks while piling up seven strikeouts in a victory over the A's.
Impact: The Braves' decision to skip Minor's turn in the rotation earlier this month has seemed to cure his struggles on the mound, at least in the short term. The 26-year-old southpaw has put together back-to-back quality efforts, as he has allowed five earned runs while posting a 1.10 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB ratio across his last 13.2 innings. Minor will be back on the mound Friday in Cincinnati.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: La Stella is out of the lineup for the second straight game Sunday against the Athletics.
Impact: La Stella has hit just .182 since the beginning of August, with just two extra-base hits over that span. His job still doesn't appear to be in immediate jeopardy, but he'll give way to Phil Gosselin for the second straight day nonetheless. No mention of any injury has occurred, so look for La Stella to return to the lineup soon.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | STATS
News: Freeman went 3 for 4 with two doubles in Thursday's loss to the Dodgers.
Impact: He's batting .517 over eight games.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | STATS
News: Upton returned Friday for Atlanta.
Impact: Upton left Thursday's game with a mild left hamstring strain.
Thu. Aug 14, 2014 | STATS
News: The Atlanta Braves have recalled Avilan from Triple-A Gwinnett. Avilan, who began the season as one of Atlanta's top setup relievers, is with the team for Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Impact: Avilan was 3-1 with a 4.85 ERA in 47 games when he was optioned to Gwinnett on July 19. He says he focused on his curveball and change-up at Gwinnett. Avilan joins James Russell as left-handers in the Braves' bullpen.
Wed. Aug 13, 2014 | STATS
News: Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez has moved Heyward back into the leadoff spot in hopes of jump-starting the team's struggling offense.
Impact: Heyward is hitting .274 with 14 homers, 43 RBIs, 65 runs scored in 99 career games at the top of Atlanta's batting order.
