Injured Max Scherzer may not be ready for start of Nationals season

There is growing concern at Washington Nationals camp that their ace Max Scherzer may not be ready for the start of the regular season.

The right-hander was diagnosed with what the club called a "stress fracture in the knuckle of his right ring finger" in December.

Back in January, Scherzer took to social media to address the injury and express his disappointment for missing the World Baseball Classic, via Twitter:

But at Nationals camp in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Thursday, Scherzer told reporters that he was unsure he would be ready for the start of the season.

Manager Dusty Baker is thinking of alternative plans in case Scherzer isn't ready.

Scherzer, the 2016 National League Cy Young winner, was 20-7 with a 2.96 ERA in 228-plus innings in 2016. He struck out 284 batters, including a spectacular 20-strikeout performance against the Detroit Tigers on May 11.

There was some good news at Nationals camp as Stephen Straburg looked ready to return after an injury-marred 2016 campaign.
