Valentine to talk with Red Sox GM
Bobby Valentine will meet Monday with Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington about the team's vacant managing position, according to a major league source.
Valentine, the source said, already has met with each of the Red Sox's three principal owners — John Henry, Tom Werner and Larry Lucchino.
The Red Sox's job has been open since the team declined to exercise Terry Francona's club options at the end of the season.
At least three other candidates remain under consideration — Blue Jays first-base coach Torey Lovullo, Tigers third-base coach Gene Lamont and Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr.
The Red Sox twice interviewed former Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum but declined to make him an offer, and the Cubs hired Sveum instead.
Valentine previously has managed the Rangers, Mets and the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan.
The meeting between Valentine and Cherington was first reported by Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports.
