Tony Bennett can make up lyrics to ‘God Bless America’ if he wants

Singer Tony Bennett may have slipped up on the lyrics to 'God Bless America,' but that's totally fine by us.

No, that’s not how "God Bless America" goes — but if anyone should be allowed to improvise what he damn well pleases, it’s legendary singer Tony Bennett.

The 88-year-old American treasure — whose timeless classic "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" has become a theme song for the city — was on hand Monday at AT&T Park for the seventh-inning stretch as the Giants hosted the Washington Nationals in the National League Division Series.

Unfortunately for the outstanding octogenarian, he tripped up over a line, dubbing America’s oceans as "bright with gold," instead of the more traditional "white with foam."

But you know what? We almost like the song better that way, Tony. And apparently we aren’t alone, judging by the Twitterverse. Below, a sampling:
