The Miami community honors Jose Fernandez in a memorial service

Fans, teammates and members of the Marlins’ front office gathered Wednesday for an emotional public memorial for Jose Fernandez.

Fernandez, the team’s 24-year-old charismatic ace, was killed tragically in a boating accident in Miami early Sunday morning with two other young men. The Marlins honored Fernandez on Monday, when everyone in uniform wore his No. 16, which will be retired. Dee Gordon’s emotional leadoff homer in Monday's win temporarily eased the pain, as did Tuesday’s grand slam by Cardinals’ Aledmys Diaz — a childhood friend of Fernandez’s.

But plenty of pain remains. Which will likely be the case for a long time to come.
