NEW YORK (AP) The Boston Red Sox have activated All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia after another stint on the 10-day disabled list because of left knee trouble.

Pedroia was in the starting lineup at his regular position and batting fifth Friday night at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox lead the AL East by 4 1/2 games over New York.

The former AL MVP played just one game in August while dealing with knee inflammation that twice landed him on the DL in a span of less than two weeks. Pedroia is batting .303 with 54 RBIs in 86 games this season.

The 34-year-old Pedroia had surgery on his left knee last October. He has been hobbled by knee problems since getting injured by a late slide from Baltimore's Manny Machado in April.

The Red Sox also activated right-handed reliever Matt Barnes, who's been out since Aug. 22 with a lower back strain. He is 6-3 with a 3.60 ERA in 60 innings.
