New York Yankees: Gleyber Torres Getting Closer to the Majors?

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 12:49 a.m. ET

New York Yankees top prospect Gleyber Torres is inching closer to the major leagues as he has earned a promotion to Triple-A after just 31 games in Double-A.

The New York Yankees grand rebuilding plan is hitting another important step. Top prospect Gleyber Torres has earned a promotion to Triple-A after just 31 games in Double-A during his age 20 season.

Torres came over to the Yankees in the Aroldis Chapman deal before the trade deadline last season.

The Yankees sent him to the Arizona Fall League last season, where he became the league's youngest MVP. In 18 games there, he hit .403 with a 1.158 OPS, three homers and 11 RBI.

In Double-A Trenton, Torres hit .267 with an .867 OPS, five homers and 18 RBI. He appeared at second, short and third for the club. Earlier this week, Torres was benched for not hustling, and came back the next day and hit a homer.

What does this mean for the New York Yankees? Well, their Triple-A club will be exciting with Torres, Clint Frazier Dustin Fowler and Tyler Wade all there and all knocking on the door for their shot to get a chance in the Bronx. For a team that won the Triple-A title last season, they could certainly find themselves there again this year with this much talent.

In terms of the major league club, I'm not sure it means too much, at least not yet. They are going to give Torres a chance to play everyday at Triple-A and continue his development. Remember, he's only 20 years old and has barely played above A ball.

Torres isn't on the 40 man roster either, so in order for him to get on there, the Yankees would have to get rid of someone, something I don't think they really want to do at this time.

Starlin Castro and Didi Gregorius aren't going anywhere. Chase Headley is owed $13 million this year and next year, and even though he's certainly cooled off from his hot start, the Yankees aren't going to just give him away at this time.

The Torres promotion is a great sign for the Yankees, and hopefully he lives up to the task. Depth is important, especially considering all of the injuries around the game already this season. If you have MiLB.tv, the squad becomes more of a must watch than they have been. In terms of the New York Yankees at the major league level, I don't think Torres has much of an impact on them in 2017.
