Wild card-contending Marlins make a trade to strengthen their rotation

Published Nov. 15, 2016 3:10 p.m. ET

The Miami Marlins are set to acquire right-hander Andrew Cashner from the San Diego Padres in a seven-player deal.

Cashner, 29, is 4-7 with a 4.76 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 16 starts (79 1/3 innings) this season.

In Miami, he’ll join a rotation that currently features Jose Fernandez, Adam Conley, Tom Koehler and Jose Urena. No. 2 starter Wei-Yin Chen is on the disabled list with an elbow injury. Usually known as sellers as the trade deadline nears, the Marlins are tied with the Cardinals for the second NL wild card.

During his seven-season major-league career -- two seasons with the Cubs and the past five with the Padres -- Cashner is 30-49 with a 3.73 ERA and 7.5 strikeouts per innings. He will be a free agent after this season.

Also going to the Marlins: right-handed starter Colin Rea and pitching prospect Tayron Guerrero. The Padres will get right-hander Jarred Cosart, reliever Carter Capps, pitching prospect Luis Castillo and first base prospect Josh Naylor.

Cashner is the second starting pitcher dealt by the Padres since the All-Star break, joining Drew Pomeranz, who now is with the Red Sox. This is also the second trade between the Marlins and Padres in the past month; reliever Fernando Rodney was shipped from San Diego to Miami on June 30.
