Mets and Jerry Blevins agree to new deal

After signing a minor league reliever, and agreeing to get Fernando Salas back for next season, the Mets have finalized the deal most fans have been waiting for.

According to FanRag Sport’s Jon Heyman, New York and lefty reliever Jerry Blevins have agreed to terms on a new contract. The New York Post’s Ken Davidoff also confirmed the signing and added that the deal is for a guaranteed $6 million.

As far back as November, the organization was convinced that Blevins would be walking away from the team and signing with a new club. As the market developed, and teams signed different quality relievers, the Mets and Blevins seemed destined to reunite.

Rumors came out that both parties would be willing to take a two-year deal, and that made it more likely that something could get worked out.

With the signing of Blevins the Mets are essentially setting up their bullpen to run the way it did last season. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though.

With pending questions still around Jeurys Familia and his possible suspension, Sandy Alderson and his staff are trying to get the team’s bullpen depth to again be a strength.

If Familia is indeed suspended, the bullpen could start out the season featuring Fernando Salas, Jerry Blevins, Hansel Robles, Zack Wheeler, Josh Edgin or Josh Smoker, and Addison Reed in the closer’s role. Others like Seth Lugo could also make an impact to start the season in the bullpen if the roles suit them out of Spring Training.

This will most likely be the last big signing the Mets make this offseason. With pitchers and catchers reporting in just nine days, it’s time to start looking forward to how the roster will shape up with existing players as the Mets start another campaign to capture the National League East title.
