If you come to a fork in the road, take it: Horse named Yogi Berra wins debut

“It ain’t over till it’s over.”

Well it was over for the field down the homestretch when a 3-year-old colt named Yogi Berra won the ninth race at Tampa Bay Downs in Florida on Friday afternoon.

Yogi Berra, who was making his debut, is owned by Jessica Steinbrenner, one of two daughters of the late George Steinbrenner. The colt is obviously named after the great Hall of Fame Yankees catcher.

Yogi Berra was racing third at the halfway point, but pulled away after the final turn, winning the 10-horse race in a time of 1:17.10. At 5-1, Yogi Berra bettors won $12 on a $2 bet.

Even cooler … the actual Yogi Berra watched the race (For video of the race, click here).

Berra’s granddaughter Lindsay Berra, an MLB.com columnist, sent out several tweets during the day.
