Colorado Rockies Rumors: Trade Talk with Texas Rangers?

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 6:32 p.m. ET

The Colorado Rockies have been reported to be in talks with at least two American League teams about potential trades involving one of their All-Star outfielders. Now it seems you can add another American League team to that list as well.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network said in a tweet on Thursday night that the Rockies and Texas Rangers have been in discussion about moving one of Colorado’s outfielders. While no names were specifically mentioned, it’s widely thought that any trade of a Colorado outfielder would involve Charlie Blackmon or Carlos Gonzalez.

Trade talks have already circulated about the Rockies and Baltimore Orioles working on a deal as have rumors about the Rockies and the Toronto Blue Jays. Both deals involve a Colorado outfielder being exchanged for a starting pitcher. However, Colorado may be looking for a reliever out of Texas. As Jordan Freemyer pointed out on PurpleRow.com, Texas does have a strong bullpen and could use a reliever as potential trade bait.

Ian Desmond, who played for the Rangers in the outfield last season, was recently signed to a five-year, $70 million contract by the Rockies. During his introductory press conference, Desmond was praised for his versatility and athleticism, citing how quickly he adapted to the outfield last season with the Rangers after playing infield prior to that with the Washington Nationals.

With Desmond signing with the Rockies, it intensified the rumors that Colorado would use him in the outfield. However, Colorado general manager Jeff Bridich has been adamant that Desmond was signed to play first base in the Mile High City.

Additionally, Bridich has indicated that the Rockies are not done dealing in the offseason. With one spot left on the 40-man roster after Colorado inked Mike Dunn to a three-year deal on Thursday, there is some flexibility left for the Rockies heading into the holidays.

However, Bridich has also warned against reading too much into any rumors involving a Colorado outfielder.
