The equipment for the Cincinnati Reds is on its way to Goodyear, Arizona, with players and staff not far behind.

The equipment for the Cincinnati Reds is on its way to Goodyear, Arizona, as fans wonder if the team has gotten any better.  Before the days of the team’s move from Florida to Arizona, the fans could drive with the trucks if they had enough endurance.  Now it takes multiple days and it leaves fans thinking about the season about to be.

The fans are bound to be wondering if the Reds are done with roster moves.  Unless Brandon Phillips does a 180, it appears that they are.  Another off-season passed with the Reds sending away good, young MLB talent and getting prospects back.

More likely on the front of most fans’ minds is whether the players are going to be a better team this year. Can Scott Schebler keep up his last two months for a full season?  Can Robert Stephenson finally stick with the big league team?

Of course, if you are going with the team, the weather is always there.  Cincinnati has the most golf courses per capita of anywhere in the Midwest, but the greater Phoenix area has its fair share of courses. Play golf, watch baseball, sit by the pool, that sounds like a nice vacation.

Cincinnati Reds’ fans can look forward to competition everywhere on the diamond aside from first base.

It’s difficult to imagine Billy Hamilton or Adam Duvall losing his job during spring training.  It could still happen though.  The Reds are at the point of the rebuild where they have to identify who is going to be a key member of the next step in the process and who will be gone.

On the diamond, the highlight of spring will be watching the non-roster position players, particularly the infielders, try to make the club.  On the infield, minor leaguers Brandon Dixon, Tony Renda, Blake Trahan, and Zach Vincej will all be in camp.  Trahan is not expected to compete for a job this spring, but the other three all want a chance to the be the back-up infielder this year.

The other fun battle will be behind the plate.  Tucker Barnhart, Devin Mesoraco, and Stephen Turner are on the roster.  Rob Brantly, Chad Wallach, and Shawn Zarraga are also in camp.

Zarraga is an intriguing minor league signing.  He appears to be that Four-A player who is never quite ready for the majors.  The catching position will likely be determined mostly by health.

Every player has something to prove this spring.  Joey Votto wants to make a run at an MVP and a batting title.  The rest of the team just wants roles that they can excel at in 2017.
