The Giants, reacting swiftly to the loss of second baseman Freddy Sanchez, will sign free-agent infielder Bill Hall, according to a major-league source.
Sanchez dislocated his right shoulder Friday night while diving for a groundball in the Giants’ 3-2 victory over the Reds. He is expected to miss significant time.
The Giants are awaiting the returns of third baseman Pablo Sandoval from a fractured right hand and infielder Mike Fontenot from a left groin strain.
Fontenot might have replaced Sanchez, but left his rehabilitation start at Triple-A on Friday night with tightness in his groin, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Hall, 31, thrived in a utility role with the Red Sox last season, but was released by the Astros after batting only .224/.272/.340 in 46 games.
The Orioles and Nationals earlier had expressed interest in Hall, sources said. The Giants will pay less than $300,000 of the remaining portion of Hall’s $3 million salary, with the Astros paying the rest.
