Source: Orioles to add Taiwanese pitcher

The Orioles, continuing their newfound foray into the Asian market, are close to signing Taiwanese left-hander Wei-Yin Chen to a three-year contract, according to a major-league source.

Chen, 26, will be the second starting pitcher signed by new Orioles GM Dan Duquette out of the Japanese leagues this offseason, joining Japanese lefty Tsuyoshi Wada.

Chen is younger than Wada, 30, and a harder thrower. He was 36-30 with a 2.59 ERA in his career with the Chunichi Dragons.

Barring a trade, right-hander Jeremy Guthrie again figures to head the Orioles’ rotation. Other candidates to start include lefty Zach Britton and righties Jake Arrieta and Tommy Hunter.
