Center fielder Adam Jones had a busy day Sunday at AT&T Park in San Francisco, driving in four runs — including a three-run homer — in the Orioles’ 10-2 drubbing of the Giants. But it was his Twitter comments afterward that attracted the most attention.
Jones tweeted that a fan in the stands threw a banana at him in the ninth inning, an action that would have clear racial overtones:
"I want to thank whatever slapd*** threw that banana towards my direction in CF in the last inning. Way to show ur class u jackass."
Jones, who is African-American, has more than 129,000 followers on Twitter, and his tweet drew 2,138 retweets and 1,136 favorites.
According to a Baltimore Sun report, a Giants spokesman said the team had received no reports of anyone throwing an object onto the field in the bottom of the ninth inning but that footage from the stadium’s security cameras would be reviewed on Monday.
Jones did not address the alleged banana-throwing incident in his postgame comments to the media, according to the report.
