After 11 straight hits, double play ends Dustin Pedroia's bid for history

Dustin Pedroia was so close.

After belting out 11 straight hits, the Boston Red Sox second baseman came up to the plate in the eighth inning Saturday with a chance to tie the MLB mark for most consecutive hits.

Fate would not be on his side as he hit a grounder to second for an easy double play.

It was probably easier to stomach given that the Red Sox won -- beating the Kansas City Royals 8-3 -- after losing the previous two games during his streak.

Still it was fun while it lasted.

"It was fun. It was definitely fun to watch that. We were all locked in every time he came to the plate, and he was locked in, too. It was definitely fun to be part of something like that," said right fielder Mookie Betts, per MLB.com.

"It was like one of those things, like a pitcher having a perfect game type of thing. Everybody knows it, but nobody says anything. Everybody knew, but we didn't say anything. We definitely enjoyed it."
