Source: White Sox to claim Manny

Manny Ramirez will not get through waivers.

The White Sox, who pursued Ramirez before the non-waiver deadline, will claim him with the intention of acquiring him, according to a major-league source.

The Dodgers have yet to put Ramirez on waivers, but that move is expected as early as Tuesday. National League teams would get the first crack at claiming Ramirez, but none would be expected to take such a step.

The White Sox, whose record is the worst of the AL contenders, seemingly would be in good position to win the claim. However, they could back off claiming Ramirez if the Dodgers delayed putting him on waivers and the White Sox’s deficit in the AL Central grew from 41/2 games.

The Rays and Rangers also are interested in Ramirez, sources say, but a claim by the White Sox would preclude either of these teams from getting a chance to obtain him.

Ramirez would need to waive his no-trade clause to go the White Sox, but it would be in his interests to join an AL club that could use him as a designated hitter. The White Sox view Ramirez as a potential difference-maker in the final weeks of the season.

The Dodgers, 12 games back in the NL West and 7½ back with five teams ahead of them in the wild-card race, are virtually out of contention. They currently owe Ramirez slightly more than $4.25 million for the rest of the season, and likely would be eager to purge the rest of his salary. They also could offer to pay part of the money in exchange for a better return.

If no trade agreement was reached, the Dodgers could simply allow Ramirez to go to the White Sox or pull him back from waivers, ending any chance he would be traded this season. The latter scenario would be unlikely.

Ramirez, 38, has played only five innings since being activated by the Dodgers on Saturday after making his third trip to the disabled list this season. He is batting .312/.404/.508, with eight home runs and 39 RBIs in 189 at-bats.
