Barry Zito placed on 15-day DL
He made the catch, but team athletic trainer Dave Groeschner went to the mound after the play. Zito threw one warmup pitch and walked off the field.
Preliminary X-rays were negative, but Zito left the clubhouse on crutches and with a swollen ankle. An MRI exam Sunday confirmed that Zito had a sprain of his right mid-foot. He's scheduled to meet with a podiatrist on Monday in San Francisco.
Zito is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in three starts and has not won since Sept. 19.
The roster move will end Zito's streak of 356 regular-season starts without missing a turn due to injury. He had been slated to pitch against Atlanta in San Francisco on Friday.
The Giants purchased the contract of right-hander Ryan Vogelsong from Triple-A Fresno to take Zito's spot. Vogelsong was 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA and 17 strikeouts in two starts for the Grizzlies.
