Phillies-Marlins Preview

Ryne Sandberg will be back with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2014, but Roy Halladay may not.

The two-time Cy Young winner has two more scheduled chances to make his case for a return.

Halladay will try to help the Phillies snap their four-game slide Monday night when he goes for a second straight win over the Miami Marlins.

Having clinched their first losing season since 2002, the Phillies (71-84) are already planning for next year and decided to remove Sandberg's interim tag and sign him to a three-year deal.

The Phillies are 18-17 under Sandberg, but have dropped four in a row following Sunday's 4-3 loss to the New York Mets.

"I think this is the right person to take us forward," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "I know his philosophy on the importance of cohesiveness throughout the organization, and that's exactly what we're looking for. I know he understands the importance of player development and scouting, he's got an idea and a vision of what's necessary to move this organization forward."

It's unclear if that includes Halladay (4-4, 6.71 ERA).

"Unfortunately that's out of my control," he told the team's official website. "I'm going to continue to play as hard as I can for the organization and my teammates, and hopefully I have a chance to pitch again. But, you know, I can't worry about things that are out of my control."

The eight-time All-Star is 15-12 with a 5.12 ERA in two seasons after going 40-16 with a 2.40 ERA in his first two with the Phillies, winning his most recent Cy Young in 2010.

Halladay is 2-0 with a 4.28 ERA in five starts since returning from right shoulder surgery. The right-hander was sharp Tuesday, yielding one run and four hits in six innings of a 6-4 win over Miami.

He's 4-1 despite a 6.51 ERA in his last five starts against the Marlins, winning his last two road meetings behind a 3.46 ERA.

Miami (57-99) enters a season-ending six-game homestand after concluding a 3-8 road trip with a doubleheader split at Washington on Sunday. The Marlins lost the second game 5-4 after a 4-2 victory in the opener.

Nathan Eovaldi (3-6, 3.79) will make his second straight start against the Phillies.

He's 0-4 with a 5.40 ERA in five previous meetings, pitching past the fifth inning only once.

The right-hander tossed four scoreless innings Wednesday but allowed three runs - two earned - before being pulled after the fifth in a 4-3 win in 10. He finished with five strikeouts and four walks while hitting a batter for the first time this season.

"I felt good until that fifth inning, when I kind of lost control," Eovaldi told the team's official website. "Up until that point, I felt really good. I was getting ahead. I was able to get ahead with my curveball, which I hadn't really been able to do all season. It felt like it was a lot easier to get ahead with my offspeed pitches, and then use my fastball."

Eovaldi has struggled against Carlos Ruiz, Jimmy Rollins and Domonic Brown, who are a combined 12 for 29 (.414) with three doubles and a homer off him.

The Marlins' next loss will give them 100 for the first time since the 1998 team went 54-108.
