Detroit hasn't played host to an All-Star Game since 1971 at Tiger Stadium.
Newer ballparks have traditionally been the site of recent All-Star Games. Milwaukee's Miller Park, which opened in 2001, hosted last year's contest. Seattle's Safeco Field, which debuted in 1999, hosted the game in 2001. Comerica Park opened in 2000.
The 2004 game will be played at Houston.
Detroit is already due to hold several major events over the next few years. Golf's 2004 Ryder Cup will be held at nearby Oakland Hills Country Club and will also host the 2008 PGA Championship. Detroit will host the Super Bowl in February, 2006 at Ford Field. Additionally, the NCAA men's basketball Final Four will be held at Ford Field in 2009.
