Phils call up C Sardinha, designate RHP Mathieson
The Philadelphia Phillies have called up catcher Dane Sardinha from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The 30-year-old Sardinha was hitting .254 with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 38 games. To make room for Sardinha on the 25-man roster, right-hander Scott Mathieson was designated for assignment.
Mathieson allowed two runs and recorded two outs in the ninth inning of Friday night's 9-5 win over Minnesota. It was his first appearance in the majors since 2006 following two Tommy John surgeries.
