Brewers sign RHP Livan Hernandez
Livan Hernandez is getting another chance, this time in Milwaukee.
''It came fast,'' Hernandez said.
And he was glad to take it.
The Braves designated Hernandez for assignment on June 15 and released him on Monday. He pitched 18 games for the Braves, all out of the bullpen, with a 1-1 record and a 4.94 ERA.
Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said he'll be used in long relief and as a spot starter.
''Smart guy. Understands how to pitch,'' Roenicke said. ''He doesn't have the stuff he used to have, but he really changes speeds really well.''
Hernandez is in his 17th major league season and has a career record of 175-177 with a 4.40 ERA.
''I know a lot of people here,'' he said. ''I've got a lot of friends.''
Milwaukee designated left-hander Juan Perez for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
The Brewers also reinstated shortstop Cesar Izturis from the 15-day disabled list and designated infielder Edwin Maysonet for assignment. They might have another roster move coming soon, with right-hander Shaun Marcum bothered by tightness in his right elbow.
He was scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday, and Roenicke said the Brewers will decide within the next few days whether to put him on the disabled list.
''We kind of know what we want to do already,'' Roenicke said. ''It's probably more of timing with that. Figuring out for sure what's the best way to proceed.''
Marcum (5-3), who has a 3.39 ERA in 13 starts, had ulnar collateral ligament surgery in 2008 when he pitched for Toronto.
