News: Petit surrendered five earned runs on seven hits and two walks in a five innings against the Phillies on Tuesday. He struck out five and did not receive a decision. Impact: The 29-year-old was in line for the win with a 3-2 lead heading into the fifth before a bomb by Jimmy Rollins and a double by Marlon Byrd leapfrogged the Phillies ahead, 5-3. Petit's ERA is 4.24 to go with a 3-3 record and 1.21 WHIP. He should continue to round out the Giants rotation in the No. 5 spot as long as Matt Cain (elbow) is sidelined.(RotoWire, )

News: Petit will remain in the rotation as long as Matt Cain (elbow) is out, Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area reports. Impact: Petit will start Tuesday's game against the Phillies after Cain was placed on the 15-day DL on Monday due to elbow inflammation. An MRI on Cain's elbow revealed no structural damage, although the Giants haven't released a timetable for him to begin throwing again. As long as his return date remains unknown, consider Petit the Giants' fifth starter indefinitely. The right-hander owns a 3.86 ERA and 1.16 WHIP, to go along with a 66:15 K:BB ratio over 63 innings this year as both a starter and reliever. He could be worth a look in the short term in deeper and NL-only formats.(RotoWire, )

Since Cain was placed on the DL retroactive to July 11, there's a chance he could only miss one turn, leaving Petit's time in the rotation once again short-lived. The right-handed Petit owns a 3.86 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 63 innings this season, most of which have came as a reliever.(RotoWire, )
