News: Howard belted his 16th home run of the season Sunday against the Diamondbacks, a two-run shot in the first inning off Vidal Nuno. He went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs in the contest. Impact: Howard, who leads the Phillies in RBI, has hit safely in his last four games.(RotoWire, )

News: Howard went 2-for-5 with a walk and two strikeouts in his return to the lineup Saturday. Impact: Howard had been on the bench for the last three games. The Phillies face a left-hander Sunday, which should have Howard back on the bench now that manager Ryne Sandberg is going with a platoon at first base.(RotoWire, )

News: GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said the Phillies have not discussed releasing Howard in the offseason, the team's official site reports. "I fully expect him to be our first baseman next year," Amaro said. "I don't know where people are coming up with him not having a future with us. He's a very big part of our organization." Impact: It was reported earlier this week that the Phillies discussed the possibility of releasing Howard, who is owed at least $60 million through 2017. Howard is currently being platooned at first base with Darin Ruf and should see most of the starts against right-handed pitchers.(RotoWire, )

News: Howard will likely get the nod Saturday since the Phillies will face a right-handed pitcher in the form of Josh Collmenter, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports. Impact: Howard was out of the lineup for a third-straight game Friday, but a matchup against Collmenter might be his ticket off the bench. However, it's not strictly a right and left platoon since Darin Ruf started Thursday against the right-hander Tim Hudson. This platoon with Ruf seems like it will be in place moving forward, so Howard's status will need to be monitored closely for the rest of the season.(RotoWire, )

News: Howard is out of the Phillies' lineup Friday for a third straight day, Stephen Gross of the Morning Call reports. Impact: A lefty in Wade Miley is toeing the rubber for Arizona, so Howard, who has been formally relegated to a platoon by manager Ryne Sandberg, will once again give way to Darin Ruf at first base. Howard sat Thursday against right-hander Tim Hudson, but Sandberg said he just wanted to get Ruf two starts in a row to "get his feet wet."(RotoWire, )

News: Manager Ryne Sandberg confirmed Thursday that Howard would be used in a platoon with Darin Ruf at first base, CSN Philly reports. "I look at it as a scenario where against some left-handed pitchers it could be a platoon situation going forward, depending on the numbers," Sandberg said. Impact: The Phillies face lefites Friday and Sunday which means Howard could be on the bench for two games this weekend. He was out of the lineup Thursday against a righty, but Sandberg said that wants to get Ruf two games in a row to "get his feet wet." Howard is hitting .216/.420/.703 with five home runs in 88 at-bats against lefties this season.(RotoWire, )

News: Howard is not in the lineup Thursday against the Giants. Impact: Howard is 22-for-67 (.328 average) with seven homers in his career against right-hander Tim Hudson, Thursday's starter for San Francisco, but manager Ryne Sandberg has decided to give the nod at first base to Darin Ruf instead. Sandberg suggested Wednesday that Howard may be deployed in a platoon moving forward, but this move suggests the team is considering giving Ruf an extended look.(RotoWire, )

News: Howard might be deployed in a platoon at first base going forward, CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury reports. "As far as the lineup, that will be a day-to-day thing," manager Ryne Sandberg said before Wednesday's game. "I know what [Howard] can do. I've seen him for 100 games. I know what he can do. I think it's important to see what a guy like Darin Ruf can do also going forward." Impact: Ruf, who was recalled from Triple-A on Tuesday, started at first base Wednesday against lefty Madison Bumgarner -- a trend that is likely to continue against southpaws for the time being. Howard is slashing just .168/.269/.221 over his last 25 games, and his career struggles against left-handed pitching have been well documented. In addition to Ruf, Howard could also have to contend with prospect Maikel Franco if he is recalled from Triple-A later this season. There are also reports that the team is willing to move on without Howard for 2015 and beyond, which would mean paying him $60 million at the end of the season to get out from under his contract. His fantasy value is at an all-time low.(RotoWire, )

News: Howard is out of the lineup Wednesday vs. the Giants, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly reports. Impact: The combination of Tuesday's 14-inning game and the fact that a lefty in Madison Bumgarner will be starting for the Giants made it a relatively easy decision for manager Ryne Sandberg to give Howard the night off. Sandberg has shown an increased willingness to shield Howard from left-handed pitching than previous manager Charlie Manuel, so there's a chance the slugging first baseman could eventually fall into a platoon at the position with the newly-recalled Darin Ruf, who gets the start Wednesday.(RotoWire, )
Mon. July 21, 2014
News: Howard had a productive night Monday, going 2-for-5 with two RBI in a loss to the Giants. Impact: Howard has been struggling mightily this month, hitting just .113 for July before his two-hit game Monday. The big first baseman has 15 home runs and 60 RBI this season, but has done so to the tune of a .220 average.(RotoWire, )

News: Howard is not in the lineup Sunday vs. the Braves, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports. Impact: With lefty Alex Wood on the mound for Atlanta, manager Ryne Sandberg will do his best to play the matchup with Philadelphia's lefty-heavy lineup. Both Howard and Ben Revere will sit, with John Mayberry and Grady Sizemore subbing in, respectively.(RotoWire, )
Fri. July 11, 2014
News: Howard went 2 for 5 with a two-run homer and three RBIs in Thursday's 9-1 win at Milwaukee. Impact: Howard's homer was his first since June 19, a stretch of 21 games. He has 15 long balls on the season.(STATS, 5:30pm)
