News: The Angels are optimistic Richards (knee) will be ready to return during spring training, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports. Impact: Richards, who will undergo season-ending knee surgery next week, was given a recovery timetable of six-to-nine months, seemingly leaving his return date rather open-ended. However, the doctors who conducted his MRI believe Richards is a perfect candidate for surgery because he tore his patellar tendon in a spot that should make the operation relatively easy. Since Richards hasn't started rehabbing yet, it's probably to early to tell if he will in fact meet the short end of that timetable, but the medical staff's optimism does provide a silver lining to an otherwise bleak development.(RotoWire, )

News: Richards suffered a patellar tendon tear during Wednesday's start and will undergo season-ending surgery next week, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. He will require six-to-nine months of recovery time and was placed on the 60-day DL. Impact: For an Angels staff already short on quality starting pitching, the absence of Richards might be the kiss of death to their hopes of holding off the Athletics for the AL West title. Moreover, the likelihood that Richards' absence stretches into the early stages of the 2015 season will probably force the Angels to make adding starting pitching depth an even greater priority in the offseason. While a significant knee injury may not be nearly as damaging to Richards' long-term outlook as an absence of a similar length due to a shoulder or elbow concern, it's still disappointing to see his breakthrough season come to an untimely end. The 26-year-old finishes the campaign with a 13-4 record, 2.61 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and a 164:51 K:BB over 168.2 innings.(RotoWire, )

News: Richards was taken off the field on a stretcher with an apparent leg injury Wednesday. The Angels said he sustained a patellar injury but didn't disclose the extent. Impact: Richards was hurt in the second inning Wednesday night while running to cover first base on a potential double-play grounder by Boston's Brock Holt. Richards' right leg buckled on the dirt near the base. Several minutes later he was wheeled off while he raised his right arm to the crowd. (STATS, 8:39pm)

News: According to manager Mike Scioscia, Richards (knee) suffered a "significant injury" in Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times reports. Impact: Scioscia did not provide any other details, but his comments indicate that Richards is indeed facing an extended absence, as views of the play and reactions indicated. Richards will fly back to Los Angeles on Friday for further evaluation of his injury.(RotoWire, )

News: Richards left Wednesday's game with a left knee patellar injury, but the extent of the injury is not yet known, the Los Angeles Times' Mike DiGiovanna reports. Impact: The team would not release any further details until he is fully evaluated, but the injury was serious enough that he was laying on the ground for eight minutes before being carted off the field. Richards suffered the injury when his left leg twisted and his knee buckled. He was in obvious pain, and the way that his teammates huddled around him on the diamond suggested that it was a very serious injury. We will update his status when more information is available.(RotoWire, )

News: Richards was carted off the field during Wednesday's game after his knee buckled as he was trying to cover first base, the Los Angeles Times' Mike DiGiovanna reports. Impact: It was a pretty serious scene on the field, as Richards was in immense pain and his teammates huddled around him as he lay on his back at first base. His right leg twisted as he was approaching first base, and given the immediate vibe on the field, it would be surprising to see him pitch again this season. We'll await word for an official diagnosis, but for now, things aren't looking good.(RotoWire, )
