News: The Tampa Bay Rays are ending Drew Smyly's season after 153 innings. Impact: With the Rays out of contention, they told the 25-year-old left-hander of their decision before Tuesday night's game at the New York Yankees. Smyly was 9-10 with a 3.24 ERA, including 3-1 with a 1.70 ERA since he was acquired from Detroit on July 31 as part of a three-team trade that sent ace David Price from the Rays to the Tigers. Smyly's previous high was 126 innings for Class A Lakeland and Double-A Erie in 2011.(STATS, 8:57pm)

News: Smyly will be shut down for the remainder of the season, the Tampa Tribune's R. Mooney reports. Impact: This shouldn't come as a big surprise, as he has logged 153 innings this season, and the Rays had previously stated that he would be limited to 150-160 innings. He'll enter 2014 with a firm hold on a spot in the Rays' starting rotation, after posting a 3.24 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP between Detroit and Tampa Bay this season. He also posted an impressive 133:42 K:BB ratio in his 153 innings, so while he may never have above average strikeout potential, he won't be a non-factor in the category, and should have no problem maintaining a strong WHIP. The Rays have yet to announce who will replace him in the starting rotation for the remainder of the 2014 season.(RotoWire, )

News: Smyly struck out eight and walked two while giving up one run on four hits over six innings against the Orioles on Saturday. Impact: Smyly didn't factor in the decision Saturday but delivered another excellent start for the Rays. There are now questions regarding the team's plans for him the rest of the way, as Saturday's start could be his last as he's now logged 153 innings, and the Rays are planning on limiting him to the 150-160 range.(RotoWire, )

News: Smyly is nearing his season innings limit, the Tampa Tribune reports. Impact: Manager Joe Maddon said the Rays will cap Smyly at around 150-160 innings this season, and considering he's already at 147 for the year, it seems Saturday's start against Kevin Gausman and the Orioles could very well be his last. Last season, Smyly maxed out at 76 innings while working out of the bullpen for Detroit, but the lefty said his arm feels fine, despite nearly doubling his workload. He's 3-1 with a 1.73 ERA in six starts since joining Tampa Bay.(RotoWire, )
