News: GM Walt Jocketty revised Phillips' (thumb) timeline for a return while speaking with ESPN.com's Jim Bowden on Sunday, stating that he expects the second baseman to return from the disabled list in approximately five weeks. Impact: The news shaves about two weeks off the 8-to-12-week timetable that Phillips was initially given after he was diagnosed with a torn left thumb ligament July 10. Still, the knowledge that Phillips will likely return in early September in a best-case scenario makes it tough to justify holding him in single-season leagues. He hadn't helped his cause prior to suffering the injury by batting .272 with seven homers and 40 RBI, well off the pace of his 2013 totals of 18 and 103, respectively.(RotoWire, )

News: The Reds have put Phillips on the 15-day disabled list following surgery for a torn ligament in his left thumb that is expected to sideline him about six weeks. Impact: Phillips hurt his thumb while sliding on an attempted catch Wednesday. The Reds already are missing first baseman Joey Votto. He is on the disabled list indefinitely with a sprained muscle above his left knee. (STATS, 11:48am)
