News: Wainwright was hit hard in his first start since the break, yielding six runs - four earned - over 4 2-3 innings Tuesday against Tampa Bay. News: Wainwright lasted just 4.2 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks while striking out four batters in dropping his fifth loss (12-5) of the year Tuesday in the Cardinals' 7-2 defeat to the Rays. Impact: It was an uncharacteristically bad outing for Wainwright on Tuesday, as this was only the second time all year he didn't last at least five innings. Wainwright is still having a dominant season and has a fantastic 2.02 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 119:31 K:BB ratio in 145.2 innings pitched this year. His next scheduled start is set for Sunday against the Cubs on the road.(RotoWire, )

News: Wainwright will start Tuesday against the Rays, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Impact: Although Wainwright threw just one inning in Tuesday's All-Star Game, manager Mike Matheny has opted to give his ace a bit of extra rest after he threw 138 innings in the first half and a combined 276.2 last season (including playoffs). He'll face a Rays team Tuesday that currently ranks 12th in the AL in runs scored with 377.(RotoWire, )

News: Wainwright will not take the mound for the Cardinals until Tuesday at the earliest, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Impact: Wainwright was the National League starter during Tuesday's All-Star Game, so it's not overly surprising to see manager Mike Matheny give his ace adequate time to rest even though he threw just one inning in the Midsummer Classic. If all goes as expected, Wainwright will start one of the two games in the series against Tampa Bay scheduled for July 22-23. The 32-year-old right-hander tossed 276.2 innings in 2013 between the regular season and playoffs, so the Cardinals may consider monitoring his innings closely in the second half. Wainwright currently has a 1.83 ERA through 138 innings in the 2014 season.(RotoWire, )

The 32-year-old had a terrific first half of the season, going 12-4 with a 1.83 ERA. Manager Mike Matheny has yet to indicate whether this will affect the rotation to start the second half.(RotoWire, )

News: Seattle's Felix Hernandez will start Tuesday night's All-Star game for the American League and Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals will open for the National League. Impact: NL manager Mike Matheny of the Cardinals chose the ace of his own staff. Wainwright is 12-4 with a 1.83 ERA and three complete games in 19 starts. Sun. July 13, 2014
News: Wainwright could pitch in Tuesday's All-Star game despite going seven innings in Saturday's 10-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, who will lead the National League, said the right-hander told him before Sunday's game against Milwaukee that he felt good and could go at the All-Star game at Target Field. Impact: Wainwright is 12-4 with a 1.83 ERA. Tuesday would be his scheduled day to throw in between starts. Matheny said Wainwright hasn't done much lobbying to pitch. Matheny is making his first appearance as an All-Star manager. He said he expects his players to compete like their "postseason is on the line." (STATS, 2:36pm)
