News: Pierzynski was released by the Red Sox on Wednesday, Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports. Impact: Apparently, there was little market on the trade front for the veteran catcher, who will be free to sign with any organization. In his half season with the Red Sox, he put together a modest .254/.286/.348 line with four home runs, 31 RBI, and 19 runs in 256 at-bats.(RotoWire, )

News: The Red Sox have designated Pierzynski for assignment and called up catching prospect Christian Vazquez from Triple-A Pawtucket. Impact: The 37-year-old Pierzynski hit .254 with four home runs and 31 RBIs in 72 this season. He signed an $8.25 million, one-year contract with the Red Sox as a free agent in December. News: The Red Sox designated Pierzynski for assignment Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Impact: The Red Sox will cut their losses, despite the fact that Pierzynski tallied a hit in seven of his last nine games. If he passes through waivers unscathed, he'll likely refuse the Red Sox's assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket, thereby entering free agency. Nonetheless, Christian Vasquez, who has been called up to take Pierzynski's spot on the 40-man roster, will man the backstop Wednesday against the White Sox.(RotoWire, )
