News: Burnett (hernia) has agreed to a one-year, $8.5 million deal with the Pirates. Impact: He will look to reclaim some of the magic he had in Pittsburgh in 2013 after scuffling in a one-year stay in Philadelphia. Last season he posted a 4.59 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP in 213.2 innings -- a far cry from the 3.30 ERA and 1.21 WHIP he had in 2013 with the Pirates. The defensive shifting and emphasis on defensively skilled position players in Pittsburgh certainly sets it apart from the way things are done in Philadelphia, so it's easy to see why Burnett fared better as a Pirate. He will also be going to a better park for pitching, so there are plenty of reasons to expect a minor bounce-back in his age-38 season.(RotoWire, )

News: Burnett is back with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The pitcher agreed Friday to an $8.5 million, one-year contract - $4.25 million less than the player option he turned down with Philadelphia. Impact: A 37-year-old right-hander, Burnett went 26-21 with a 3.41 ERA for Pittsburgh in 2012-13, helping the Pirates return to the postseason in 2013 following a 21-year drought. Burnett spurned an offer Pittsburgh last offseason and eventually signed with Philadelphia, where he went 8-18 with a 4.59 ERA in 34 starts. His 18 losses led the majors. Burnett and the Phillies both declined a $15 million mutual option, and the pitcher then turned down his player option.(STATS, 6:15pm)

News: Burnett, who signed a one-year, $8.5 million contract with the Pirates on Friday, said that he underwent hernia surgery right after the season ended, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Impact: This was expected, but Burnett confirmed after his signing was made official that he did undergo surgery to address the hernia issue that bothered him all year long. He added that he expects to a full-go come spring training. Burnett left more than $4 million on the table to come back to Pittsburgh -- his player option with the Phillies was worth $12.75 million -- but he'll get to play for what should be a contending team and there's reason to believe his numbers will improve with a better defense behind him.(RotoWire, )
