News: Morton said Saturday that a decision hasn't been made regarding possible sports hernia surgery, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Impact: Morton fanned six over four innings in a rehab start for Double-A Altoona on Thursday, but he also gave up two runs on four hits and was clearly grimacing on most of his follow-throughs. Perhaps the Pirates will decide to just send him for surgery, but he said he'd be open to pitching out of the bullpen over the rest of the season.(RotoWire, )

News: The Pirates are unsure whether Morton (sports hernia) will pitch in Pittsburgh in September after a tepid rehab start for Double-A Altoona on Thursday. Impact: Morton grimaced during his follow-through on a majority of his pitches. His velocity, 88 to 92 mph, was decent enough for a late-season appearance, but he didn't dominate the Double-A batters he faced. Don't look for Morton to pitch again unless the Pirates get hit by a number of other injuries, as the righty is operating at far less than 100 percent.(RotoWire, )

News: Morton (sports hernia) will make a rehab start at Double-A Altoona on Thursday, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Impact: Morton is expected to throw five innings, with a cap around 75 pitches. The Pirates would probably prefer to have Morton make two turns in the minors before returning to the rotation, but with the team in a dogfight for one of the two Wild Card spots, his activation could be hastened.(RotoWire, )

News: Morton, who was originally placed on the DL on Sunday with right hip inflammation, has been re-diagnosed with a sports hernia, MLB.com's Tom Singer reports. Impact: Morton still intends to return this season. However, the nature of this injury would seem to be more problematic than simple inflammation. Sports hernias typically require a surgical procedure, but Morton plans to push that back to the offseason in an attempt to pitch through the ailment. The Pirates are quickly fading from the NL playoff race in the wake of their seven-game losing streak, and if they find themselves out of contention by the time Morton is deemed ready to return, the team brass may just opt to shut the right-hander down for the season and send him in for surgery.(RotoWire, )

News: Morton was placed on the 15-day DL on Sunday due to right hip inflammation. Impact: Morton lasted just three innings Friday and has allowed five earned runs in back-to-back starts, but it's possible the injury has affected his performance. He'll be out of commission until early September, with the move clearing up a spot for Gerrit Cole to start Wednesday against the Braves. For now, Brent Morel was recalled to serve as a temporary replacement on the roster.(RotoWire, )
