News: Mercer (forearm) is back in the lineup Tuesday against the Braves. Impact: The 27-year-old will return after missing four starts with the forearm injury, but he intimated that he's still less than 100 percent. While Mercer suggested he'll be fine to play through it so long as his pain doesn't get worse, it would make sense if the Pirates provided him additional maintenance in the short term.(RotoWire, )

News: Mercer (forearm) is not in the lineup Monday vs. the Braves, MLB.com reports. Impact: Mercer has been able to pinch-hit in two of his last three games, so although he remains out of the starting lineup, it doesn't appear that the team is considering placing him on the DL quite yet. He was able to take ground balls, but did not make any throws while working out during the pregame session. Expect Mercer to be available Monday in a pinch-hitting capacity yet again.(RotoWire, )

News: Mercer (forearm) remains out of the lineup Sunday against the Nationals, MLB.com's Tom Singer reports. Impact: Mercer will miss his third straight contest due to forearm tightness, with Josh Harrison once again taking over at shortstop. The Pirates recalled Brent Morel from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday to serve as a reserve infielder in case Mercer's absence is extended or if he eventually requires a DL stint.(RotoWire, )

News: Mercer (forearm) is not in the lineup Saturday versus the Nationals. Impact: Mercer continues to deal with the forearm tightness that prevented him from taking the field Friday. Josh Harrison will again step in and make the start at shortstop. As of now, Mercer continues to be listed as day-to-day, but if the tightness doesn't subside within the next day or two, the Pirates may have a decision to make.(RotoWire, )

News: Mercer (forearm) is out of the lineup Friday against the Nationals, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Impact: With Mercer ailing, super-utility man Josh Harrison will step in for his first start at short since 2012. After leaving Thursday's game, Mercer said he has never dealt with a similar injury before, but there's been nothing from the team to suggest he's facing an extended absence.(RotoWire, )

News: Mercer left Thursday's game with tightness in his right forearm. Impact: He's considered day to day after missing Friday's contest.(STATS, 0:23am)

News: Mercer, who left Thursday's game with forearm tightness, has never dealt with a similar injury before. "It started out just being something I felt in my forearm," Mercer said in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "Then, as I continued to throw, it really started tightening up. It was out of the blue. I've never had forearm problems before." Impact: Mercer has been the glue to Pittsburgh's infield both offensively and defensively since the end of May. It doesn't sound as though the shortstop will miss more than a couple days, but any absence would hurt the team, as they really have no backup better than Jayson Nix or Michael Martinez with Clint Barmes (groin) sidelined.(RotoWire, )

News: Mercer was removed from Thursday's game with right forearm tightness, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Impact: Mercer was pulled from the contest after two at-bats, with Jayson Nix coming off the bench to replace him. The Pirates have already been without Neil Walker (back) the last eight games, so a potential Mercer absence could really test the club's middle infield depth. Walker was at least on deck for a pinch-hitting opportunity Thursday, suggesting he could return to the lineup over the weekend, but Mercer's status remains unknown.(RotoWire, )

News: Mercer went 3 for 4 with a double in Pittsburgh's 7-2 win over visiting Miami on Thursday. Impact: Mercer is hitting .357 with six RBIs over his last 11 games.(STATS, 4:40pm)
Fri. Aug 8, 2014
News: Mercer raised his batting average to a season-high .260 mark with three hits in four at-bats Thursday. Impact: Since the end of May, Mercer has compiled an impressive slash line of .301/.347/.449 in 238 plate appearances. The shortstop has really come into his own, especially after his backup (and former competitor for playing time) Clint Barmes went on the DL in late June.(RotoWire, )
