News: Middlebrooks went 0-for-4 in Friday night's loss to the Mariners. He had been dealing with a hamstring injury. Impact: Middlebrooks didn't start the previous game as a precaution but ended up entering mid game. Since his return to active duty, he's hitting just .173/.218/.231 with 13 strikeouts in 55 plate appearances. Injuries have certainly had an impact, but it's still fair to question whether or not he'll be a consistent hitter in the major leagues. He and Jackie Bradley are two prospects of diminishing value that could find a new start elsewhere.(RotoWire, )

News: Middlebrooks was diagnosed with a hamstring strain but isn't expected to miss much time, the Boston Herald's Scott Lauber reports. "We don't feel like this is a long-term thing," Farrell said. "But we'd be putting him in jeopardy if we were to start him tonight." Impact: He left Tuesday's game with tightness in his right hamstring and is out of the lineup Wednesday, but he should be considered day-to-day for now. Utilityman Brock Holt will get the start at third base Wednesday.(RotoWire, )

News: Middlebrooks left Tuesday's game against the Angels with right hamstring tightness, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. Impact: Although Middlebrooks managed to beat out an infield in the fourth inning, he hurt his hamstring in the process and was immediately lifted for a pinch runner. The Red Sox are labeling the injury "tightness" for now, but it would make sense if they sent him for additional testing. Brock Holt and Kelly Johnson seem like the top candidates to see opportunities at third base should Middlebrooks miss time, though Xander Bogaerts is an option as well.(RotoWire, )

With manager John Farrell needing to get Brock Holt in the lineup everyday, a struggling Middlebrooks makes that task easier.
