News: Grandal has used starts at first base to strengthen his surgically-repaired right knee, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Regarding his normal position, catcher, he said, "It got to a point when I went past the halfway mark this year, I was doing pretty good but my legs just started getting tired. That might've been one of the reasons I went to first a little bit more. So far, I'm happy with where I'm at. It's just another stepping stone." Impact: Entering Monday's game, Grandal has taken on first base in seven of his last nine appearances, as Rene Rivera continues to garner most of the starts at catcher when one of the Padres' big three (Andrew Cashner, Ian Kennedy, and Tyson Ross) toes the rubber. A surprising development is their respective years at the plate. Rivera has been far more consistent, hitting .248/.316/.420, while Grandal has belted a career-best 11 homers opposite a dismal .209/.304/.361 line. Although their division of time behind the plate is warranted, Grandal intends to return to everyday duty as a backstop during winter ball in the Dominican Republic. If all goes well, the Padres' competition at catcher will be one of the more intriguing battles of spring training 2015, especially if top prospect, Austin Hedges, is given an opportunity to stick with the big club during camp.(RotoWire, )

News: Grandal is out of the lineup Sunday against the Rockies, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Impact: Grandal will sit for third time in the last four games, while Rene Rivera mans the backstop and Tommy Medica takes over at first base. He'll likely continue to see the bench frequently down the stretch, as the Padres seemingly would prefer to get a look at their younger players instead, especially with Grandal set to hit free agency next season. Overall, the 25-year-old has had a disappointing 2014 campaign, slashing .209/.304/.361 with only 25 extra-base hits.(RotoWire, )

News: Grandal is out of the lineup Friday, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports. Impact: This is just a standard day of for Grandal, as there are only a few players on the Padres at this point in the season who are typically in the lineup everyday. Tommy Medica will start at first base.(RotoWire, )

News: Grandal is out of the lineup Thursday against the Diamondbacks, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Impact: Grandal is playing a lot of first base these days with fellow catcher Rene Rivera warranting more at-bats, but manager Bud Black will tap Jake Goebbert for a start at the position on Thursday. Though he's done some nice things in the power department with 13 doubles and 11 homers in 310 at-bats, Grandal's .210 average wasn't what the Padres signed up for when they acquired him for Mat Latos back in December 2011.(RotoWire, )
