News: Fried (elbow) will be traded to the Braves as part of Friday's deal that sends Justin Upton to San Diego, ESPN's Jim Bowden reports.
Impact: The Braves' total haul in the Upton trade has not yet been revealed, but Fried is believed to be the most desirable of the pieces coming back to Atlanta. The left-hander was the seventh overall pick in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft and entered last season as one of the Padres' top pitching prospects before elbow issues ultimately derailed his campaign and resulted in Tommy John surgery in August. As a result, he'll likely be sidelined for all of 2015, but given the generally positive recent history of pitchers coming back from the procedure, Fried's long-term prospects remain bright. He's still a few years away from the big leagues, but further adds to an intriguing stable of young arms in the organization.
