News: Scutaro (back) was released by the Giants on Wednesday.
Impact: This move was effectively made last week when the team designated Scutaro for assignment, as the veteran was never going to accept an outright assignment to Triple-A. Back issues plagued Scutaro's 2014 campaign, limiting him to just five games after he appeared in at least 104 games in each of his previous 10 campaigns. The 39-year-old underwent spinal fusion surgery in December and his future is uncertain.

News: Scutaro was designated for assignment by the Giants on Wednesday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact: Scutaro missed nearly all of the 2014 campaign with a back injury after playing 127 games with the club in 2013. The Giants needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-acquired Norichika Aoki, but plan to keep Scutaro as he recovers from spinal fusion surgery.

News: Scutaro has been designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants as he recovers from back surgery.
Impact: The Giants say they plan to retain Scutaro and continue working with him through his rehabilitation following back surgery that could end his career. Dr. Michael Wang performed a fusion last month to alleviate the troublesome area at level L-2/L-3 of Scutaro's spine. It will be four-to-six months before doctors determine whether Scutaro can play baseball again.
