MLB 49 43 FOX MLB Radar Gun: Who's speeding up and slowing down? 11336345 Slowing down: John Ely and Carlos Monasterios, Dodgers Slowing+down%3A+John+Ely+and+Carlos+Monasterios%2C+Dodgers MLB

The fissures in the Dodgers’ patchwork rotation are obvious now. After a charmed first six weeks in the major leagues, John Ely's 0-2 with a 9.20 ERA in his last three starts. And now fellow rookie Carlos Monasterios has joined Chad Billingsley on the disabled list. Monasterios had already lost his place in the rotation based on performance with two ineffective starts in a row. Now the Dodgers are back where they started — placing their faith in Vicente Padilla and hoping Ned Colletti can find pitching for free. Radar gun reading: 66 mph

MLB 49 43 FOX MLB Radar Gun: Who's speeding up and slowing down? 11336344 Slowing down: Aaron Rowand, Giants Slowing+down%3A+Aaron+Rowand%2C+Giants MLB

It’s been a difficult year for Rowand. He missed time in April after sustaining facial fractures when he was hit in the head by a Vicente Padilla pitch. More recently, he's batted only .150 over his last 31 games. Andres Torres is now the Giants’ center fielder of choice, as Bruce Bochy's shuffled a lineup also without the injured Mark DeRosa. With a $12 million salary in 2010, 2011 and 2012, Rowand's almost impossible for the Giants to trade. Radar gun reading: 68 mph

Blackburn and Slowey must really want Cliff Lee as a teammate. Their back-to-back performances in Philly reinforced the Twins’ need for a frontline starter who can handle potent left-handed lineups. Both lasted only 1 2/3 innings and surrendered a combined 15 earned runs. The Twins are generally reluctant to part with top prospects in trades, but unless Blackburn and Slowey improve, they may have no choice. Radar gun reading: 70 mph

MLB 49 43 FOX MLB Radar Gun: Who's speeding up and slowing down? 11336303 Slowing down: Dan Haren, Diamondbacks Slowing+down%3A+Dan+Haren%2C+Diamondbacks MLB

By name, he’s the Diamondbacks’ best trade chip, but he’s only 7-5 with a 4.71 ERA. He'll need to pitch better than that for clubs — particularly those in the American League — to feel comfortable taking on a contract that pays him $12.75 million each of the next two seasons. If he rights himself quickly, Haren could bring back a multi-prospect package. Radar gun reading: 72 mph

MLB 49 43 FOX MLB Radar Gun: Who's speeding up and slowing down? 11336342 Slowing down: Carl Crawford, Rays Slowing+down%3A+Carl+Crawford%2C+Rays MLB

Crawford hasn’t had a great month, the sort of thing that can be magnified in a contract year when millions are at stake. Prior to his big game against the Marlins on Saturday, Crawford was hitting just .214 in June, and the Rays are 6-8 since beginning the month with a series victory at Toronto. Not a terrible funk, but the margin for error in the AL East is very narrow. On Monday morning, the Rays didn't have at least a share of first place for the first time since late April. MLB 49 43 FOX MLB Radar Gun: Who's speeding up and slowing down? 11336305 Speeding up: Arthur Rhodes, Reds Speeding+up%3A+Arthur+Rhodes%2C+Reds MLB

Yes, Rhodes is still in the major leagues — and thriving. The 40-year-old's been one of the most effective late-inning relievers anywhere this season, and he’s not just facing lefties. He hasn’t allowed a run in 28.2 straight innings, the longest streak for a Reds reliever since 1967, according to research by the team. He’s surrendered only one home run despite pitching at hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark. Perhaps we shouldn’t be so surprised. He has an ERA under 2.00 since returning to the major leagues after a one-year hiatus in 2007. Radar gun speed: 89 mph

MLB 49 43 FOX MLB Radar Gun: Who's speeding up and slowing down? 11336179 Speeding up: Gavin Floyd, White Sox Speeding+up%3A+Gavin+Floyd%2C+White+Sox MLB

Don’t be fooled by the 2-7 record. Floyd's recently been one of the game’s most impressive pitchers, with a 1.23 ERA over his last three starts. (Remarkably, he’s 0-1 during that span. He took the loss in Ted Lilly’s near no-hitter and had a no-decision against Stephen Strasburg in Friday’s 11-inning Chicago victory.) The improvement of Floyd and the rest of the rotation has been a big factor in the White Sox’s recent 11-2 surge and return to the .500 mark. Thanks to the wins, Kenny vs. Ozzie has faded from the headlines. Radar gun reading: 92 mph

MLB 49 43 FOX MLB Radar Gun: Who's speeding up and slowing down? 11336304 Speeding up: Scott Downs, Blue Jays Speeding+up%3A+Scott+Downs%2C+Blue+Jays MLB

Remember all those early-season trade rumors about Downs? They faded away, for two reasons: The Blue Jays have been surprisingly competitive, and Downs was 0-3 with a 6.23 ERA after his first 11 appearances. Since then, he’s looked more like the dominant left-handed reliever he can be, with a 2.14 ERA and .205 opposing batting average. He’s going to be a free agent after this season, so expect plenty of trade speculation about him in the coming month. Radar gun reading: 94 mph

MLB 49 43 FOX MLB Radar Gun: Who's speeding up and slowing down? 11336362 Speeding up: Josh Hamilton, Rangers Speeding+up%3A+Josh+Hamilton%2C+Rangers MLB

It’s easy to forget how good the Rangers were last year. When September began, they had a real chance to reach the playoffs for the first time since 1999. We’ll never know how good they would have been with a healthy Josh Hamilton. After driving in a league-best 130 runs in 2008, he finished with just 54 last year. He should surpass that total any day now. He’s found a home in the No. 5 spot — right behind Vladimir Guerrero — and is a big reason why Texas leads the AL West. Radar gun reading: 95 mph

MLB 49 43 FOX MLB Radar Gun: Who's speeding up and slowing down? 11336361 Speeding up: Jose Reyes, Mets Speeding+up%3A+Jose+Reyes%2C+Mets MLB

When Reyes was diagnosed with a thyroid condition in March, it was reasonable to wonder how much he'd contribute this year. Now we have the answer. He’s batting leadoff again (where he belongs) and catalyzing the offense for the not-so-dysfunctional Mets. He's scored 25 runs in 33 games —  to go along with a .326 batting average — since suddenly brilliant skipper Jerry Manuel moved him back to the top spot on May 15. More importantly, the Mets look like legitimate contenders. Radar gun reading: 97 mph

MLB 49 43 FOX MLB Radar Gun: Who's speeding up and slowing down? 11338708 This week's Radar Gun This+week%27s+Radar+Gun MLB

It was barely more than a month ago — May 17 — that Marcus Thames walloped a walk-off home run at Yankee Stadium to beat the Red Sox, 11-9. At that moment, Boston was 8 1/2 games back in the American League East with a 19-20 record. Many Sox fans were probably resigned to the fact that this wouldn’t be their year. Now check the standings. The Yankees are in first place, with the Red Sox and Rays only one game back. Boston's 24-8 since the Thames game, including six straight wins.

Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the other East division, Stephen Strasburg burnished his All-Star credentials with two stellar starts in the last week.

Here’s a look at other trends around baseball in our latest FOX Radar Gun.
