MLB 49 43 Winter meetings winners and losers 31468599 Winner: Angel Pagan Winner%3A+Angel+Pagan MLB

Pagan signed the richest free-agent contract of the meetings: four years and $40 million to remain in San Francisco. It appears Pagan’s exquisite timing is not limited to chasing down balls in center field. He was viewed as a non-tender candidate when the Mets traded him to the Giants one year ago. Now he’s a very wealthy man — not to mention a world champion.

MLB 49 43 Winter meetings winners and losers 31463932 Winner: Boston Red Sox Winner%3A+Boston+Red+Sox MLB

The Red Sox are adding one solid veteran after another: David Ross and Jonny Gomes before the meetings; Mike Napoli (pictured, left), Shane Victorino (pictured, right) and Koji Uehara while in Nashville. Ben Cherington hasn’t acquired a superstar this winter, but he’s putting together a professional clubhouse from which new manager John Farrell should be able to fashion a winning team. The Red Sox are still $50 million or so below last year’s Opening Day payroll, so they aren’t done yet.

MLB 49 43 Winter meetings winners and losers 31463931 Winner: Minnesota Twins Winner%3A+Minnesota+Twins MLB

Give credit to veteran Twins GM Terry Ryan: He’s acknowledged that his team needs power pitching if it is going to compete with the Detroit Tigers. So, he took the painful-yet-correct step of trading center fielders Denard Span and Ben Revere for two big arms (Alex Meyer and Trevor May) along with a starter who can help Minnesota’s thin rotation right away (Vance Worley, pictured). The moves will look brilliant if top prospect Aaron Hicks can handle the center field job in 2013.

MLB 49 43 Winter meetings winners and losers 31463930 Winner: Baltimore Orioles Winner%3A+Baltimore+Orioles MLB

Dan Duquette has proved to be an expert tinkerer in his second act as a big-league general manager, valuing role players and positional flexibility over superstar names. Toward that end, he re-signed Nate McLouth to a very reasonable one-year, $2 million contract with the idea that he could become the Orioles’ everyday left fielder. Duquette isn’t done — he wants to add a starter — but he should be lauded for filling a need at such low cost.

MLB 49 43 Winter meetings winners and losers 31463934 Winner: Washington Nationals Winner%3A+Washington+Nationals MLB

GM Mike Rizzo surprised many in the industry when he signed Dan Haren to a one-year, $13 million contract. If Haren stays healthy, the move will be a masterstroke. Rizzo wanted to upgrade an already excellent rotation, and Haren’s short-term deal is a much more efficient way of doing so than spending huge dollars on Zack Greinke. Rizzo also has positioned himself to re-sign Adam LaRoche on club-friendly terms.

MLB 49 43 Winter meetings winners and losers 31464593 Loser: Michael Bourn Loser%3A+Michael+Bourn MLB

One by one, teams have filled their center-field needs with players other than Bourn — first the Braves, then the Giants, then the Phillies. Bourn’s skill set (leadoff hitter, excellent defense in center) is coveted by teams but apparently not at the price tag agent Scott Boras is floating. Bourn’s best hope for big dollars is that the Yankees will trade Curtis Granderson and replace him with Bourn on a long-term deal.

MLB 49 43 Winter meetings winners and losers 31464601 Loser: New York Yankees Loser%3A+New+York+Yankees MLB

The Yankees had a disastrous week, beginning with the news of Alex Rodriguez’s second hip surgery and continuing with the disappointment of not signing Jeff Keppinger or Eric Chavez. The Yankees have the money to be a player in this winter’s marketplace, but the mythical $189 million payroll ceiling for 2014 is causing an identity crisis of sorts. In New York, it’s not enough to bring back aging pitchers from a team that was swept in the ALCS.

MLB 49 43 Winter meetings winners and losers 31463933 Loser: Los Angeles Angels Loser%3A+Los+Angeles+Angels MLB

The Angels were co-champions of last year’s winter meetings — with the now-silent Marlins — but lately have seemed content to add average talent. Tommy Hanson, acquired before the meetings, had declined in the National League. Joe Blanton (pictured), signed this week, had a 4.51 ERA in the National League and was given a two-year, $15 million contract. Their rotation underperformed in 2012 and is even worse now.

MLB 49 43 Winter meetings winners and losers 31464595 Loser: Kansas City Royals Loser%3A+Kansas+City+Royals MLB

What, exactly, is Royals general manager Dayton Moore waiting for? He is the only active GM in baseball to (a) hold his current job for at least six full seasons and (b) produce zero winning records during that span. He waited too long to trade reliever Joakim Soria, who then blew out his elbow and left as a free agent. Now Moore is hesitating to move Billy Butler (pictured) or Wil Myers for the high-end starting pitcher he desperately needs.

MLB 49 43 Winter meetings winners and losers 31470280 Loser: New York Mets Loser%3A+New+York+Mets MLB

At last, the Mets signed David Wright to the franchise contract he deserved. But their approach to R.A. Dickey has been dubious, making below-market offers for the reigning Cy Young Award winner in what appears to be a half-hearted attempt to retain him. The Mets kept Wright because they had little choice but to do so. Their next big move will be more indicative of their course, and the early indications aren’t promising.

We waited a little longer than usual to render a verdict on this year’s winter meetings. See, the hope was that Zack Greinke, Josh Hamilton or Justin Upton would find new teams in extra innings after executives and agents filed out of the Gaylord Opryland. Sorry. Nonetheless, here’s a look at others who moved the needle — for good or ill — over four days in Nashville.
