The M's were loaded with talent and expectations in April. They had acquired Cliff Lee, Chone Figgins and Milton Bradley in the offseason to go along with remaining stars Ichiro Suzuki, Franklin Gutierrez and staff ace Felix Hernandez. But a lack of offense and a spotty bullpen doomed them early. Then Bradley was sidelined with emotional issues, Ken Griffey Jr. retired abruptly and Lee was traded to the Rangers on July 9. The M's now sit in the AL West cellar, 22.5 games back and on Monday, Aug. 9 they fired manager Don Wakamatsu.
